i'm carol costello. this morning, the mason dixon line is covered in ice and etched in misery. in atlanta, this is the challenge of the hour. most of those cars you see littering interstates like the zombie apocalypse are abandoned. and, of course, a big obstacle in getting the area up and rung. beginning next hour, the national guard and state agencies will shuttle those drivers back to their cars. the impact stretches far across the south. in alabama, some 10,000 school kids are waking up in their own beds this morning. they spent tuesday night camping out at school. about 1,600 other kids were still stranded overnight. alabama's governor, like many elected leaders across the region, says the problem wasn't a lack of preparation. but an unpredictable storm. >> no one knew exactly where the line of freezing rain and snow would take place. unfortunately the predictions were not exactly what we thought they would be. no one has any control over that except the lord. >> here's a reminder of just how foreig

carol. >> okay.ant to change gears just a bit because there's another problem in sochi right now, and kind of that problem kind of dims in light of what you've just said, but it is serious because these are the winter olympics and there's no snow in sochi. it's 50 degrees there, right? >> it is. i'm here on the coast of the black sea. and the russians have billed sochi as, look, it's warm down at the sea and up in the mountains it's cold. but we were up in the mountains today, and it was around 50 degrees and raining by the ski jump site. and very little snow in sight. so i talked to a guy who i've described as the snow whisperer. he's from finland. he's a snow specialist. and i asked him, is there going to be snow a little bit over a week from now? take a listen to what he had to say. >> first of all, don't worry about the snow. snow will be guaranteed. >> guaranteed? >> yeah. >> why? >> because the concept is based on three steps. >> uh-huh. >> first of all backbone, order a snow making system. >>

i'm carol costello. the ntsb is investigating a huge mistake by a southwest airlines jet. late last night the plane actually landed at the wrong airport. flight 4013 took off from chicago's midway airport headed for dallas, texas. boeing 737 was scheduled to make a shortstop at branson airport in missouri but landed seven miles away at a much smaller airport. passengers knew something was wrong when the pilot stepped on the brakes hard, shortly after touchdown. >> so we landed and as i said it was a hard landing. there was burnt rubber. at that point the pilot came on and said welcome to branson but didn't say anything else. then he comes on five minutes later and says we have landed at the wrong airport. we landed at clark field which is near branson airport. >> the runway at taney county airport is half the size the plane was supposed to land at in branson and pose ad lot of safety risks. >> reporter: a close call and a rough landing. the passengers on board they were just really feet away from disaste

i'm carol costello.uch for joining me. the nation's largest bank has struck a deal with federal prosecutors in the bernie madoff ponzi scheme. you might remember. it has been five years ago since that explosive scandal that madoff had carried out one of the biggest investment scams in history. jpmorgan chase will pay $1.7 billion to settle criminal charges accusing it of ignoring warning signs. it is the largest penalty of a bank in the nation. i know that was difficult to follow but i apologize for that. in short, jpmorgan is going to pay out $1.7 billion to victims of bernie madoff for its part in this scheme. we're trying to figure out what part jpmorgan played in all of this? >> they were his banker for 20 years, a banker to a man that took money from charities, from celebrities, from mom and pop investors and had the largest ponzi scheme in history happening right there under the nose of jpmorgan chase, the biggest, most sophisticated bank pretty much anywhere in the world. that's what happened here

i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. it is nearly three years before the presidential election. by many accounts the republican wrote to the white house runs through new jersey. get ready to hit the brakes. that traffic jam on the right side of your screen is blossoming into a political scandal for gop darling chris christie. he is expected to talk about that at a news conference in just a couple of hours. e-mail shows a top aide to the new jersey governor ordered lane closures to punish the democratic mayor of fort lee which sits at the foot of the george washington bridge. later e-mails among christie allies show a certain giddiness as the september traffic snarl trapped thousands of motorist, including school children and emergency vehicles. four months later, traffic is flowing more freely this morning but roadblocks may now lay in the path of a christie campaign. cnn's joe johns is here to walk us through the paper trail and chief washington correspondent jake tapper will take us through the fallout. joe let's begin
