carol anderson, she's chair of african american studies at emory university and author of "white rage: the unspoken truth of our racial divide." and leonard pitts, jr., he's a pulitzer-prize winning columnist with the miami herald. carol, i want to start with you. i wanted to start on the events of friday night, but the comments of the president today put that in a different dimension. the images that you saw on friday night of people walking with torches on the uva campus versus the one the president saw seem to be a different picture. what came to your mind? >> what came to my mind when i saw the torches and the marching was it reminded me so much of like klan marches in the '20s. it reminded me of the marchs that happened in montgomery as the klan was trying to force african americans to get back on those jim crow buses, to get back in their place. it was a signal of white power and of trying to create black fear. as i thought about it, it was a well... a way of seeing how this toxin of racism and white supremacy has reemerged in a very vir you -- virulent form in american society,

joining us now for perspective on the history and evolution of that movement is carole anderson. she's the author of "white rage: the unspoken truth of our nation's divide." her story today in "the guardian" newspaper is called "america is hooked on the drug of white supremacy. we're paying for that today". professor it's a pleasure for having you with us tonight. thanks for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> i wanted you to be with us tonight because i was very much struck by your perspective on this as something that we can't kick as a country, something that we have an ongoing problem with that seems to be getting worse but it's something that we sort of latently have. can you give us your perspective on this? >> the way that the article came about, i was trying to figure out how is it that we see it but we're not being able to in fact move forward. so we have the republican party, that is the party of patriots. but we see these elements say with the russia investigation. we see the kind of incompetency but we're not seeing any kind of pushback and i couldn't figure th

joining me now, former investigator for the southern poverty law center and carol anderson, professorcan-american studies at emory university. professor, when you look at the data coming out, again, from the southern poverty law center, as well as the headlines we've unfortunately had to report on, not only within the last couple of weeks, but within the last three or four years, what does this tell you in terms of what we're seeing happening today? >> i believe that what we're really seeing is the kind of culmination or the result of years of trolling in the ground of white supremacy, and legitimizing that. first through dog whistles, such as welfare queen, thug, law and order, and then with the birther movement, and then seeing that person who is championed the birther movement then coming in to being the president of the united states because his racism was so virulent that it spoke to a broad base of american citizens. and that legitimacy is what we see. >> when we look at the map of hate groups in the united states, were they existent prior to some of the themes critics will say
