this is so -- i wanna talk about "the carol burnett show."out on dvd. you did it for 11 seasons. is that right? >> yes, yes. >> seth: and when you did it, certainly the idea of a woman having her own variety show was a big deal. you were the first to ever do it. how did it even come about that you got your own show on cbs? >> i had a peculiar contract with cbs. it was a ten year contract. and within the first five years there was a clause -- a wonderful clause that said that if i wanted to do a one-hour variety show within the first five years, they would have to put it on whether they wanted to or not. >> seth: wow. you had a good lawyer. >> i sure did. [ laughter ] but, you know, i never thought i would want to do it, until about the last week of the fifth year, we just bought a house in california, we had put a down payment on it, and i had not been employed that much. >> seth: got it. >> yeah, and i said, you know what, maybe we better push that button, and so i called cbs back here in new york, one of the vice presidents, and i said, you

charlie: how did you come to create "the carol burnett show"? well, i got my training on the gary moore show. doing sketches and different characters with what i absolutely loved doing. and i had signed a 10-year contract with cbs as i was leaving the gary moore show. there was a caveat in the first five years that some brilliant lawyer or my agent or somebody came up with that was, said, if within the first five years of the 10-year contract, if i wanted to push that button, they would have to put us on the air one hour, 30 pay or play righty shows. 30 one hour. charlie: explain to people what pay or play -- carol: if they did not pick us up on that contract they would , have to pay us for 30 varieties on the air or not. they took the chance to put us on. they did not want me to -- they had forgotten, because i did not think i wanted to do it. to host a variety show, i never thought i would. the five years was almost up. there was one week to go. and my husband and i had just put a down payment on a house in california. and i was not quite as i
