and over to carol costello over to port canaveral where people have gathered to watch the viewing, and carol, some reports of a million people gathered. what is the mood like there? >> it is joyous, anderson. i know it is an emotional day for nasa, but people could not be happier here. i'm off of 528 on a patch of land in port canaveral, but what a view. take a look. over my shoulder, you can actually see, or at least i can the space shuttle, itself, and it is a tiny thing in the distance, but when takes off, you will see the bright lights and the rumbling of the ground, but what makes this spot is so exciting is that the amateur radio guys have a line hooked into mission control so that the people here can hear the countdown from nasa and they will pipe it out to the crowd. and the crowd just loves it. [ cheers ] and anderson, people from all over the world are here, and i have talked to people from missouri, kentucky and some people from canada here who have been camped out on the beach for a couple of days now. they arrived three days ago and scoped out the area, and have this spot.

carol costello is joining us from washington. carol, i bet you're going to get a lot of folks weighing in on this one. >> i urge all of our facebook friends to keep it clean. that's my only request today. what is happening in washington is political gamesmanship at its worse. it's ugly and more than a little scary. the united states has never gone into default because past administrations and lawmakers have compromised. cnn contributor john avalon says lawmakers have raised the debt ceiling 77 times including 8 tooils times under ronald reagan and back in the day politicians weren't quite so macho. many insist on standing on principal even though most americans stand on the side of good old fashioned compromise. two-thirds of americans want the president and republicans to compromise, rather than stand up for their beliefs to get things done. wow. a break from part is anship. perhaps the happiest outcome of the president's speech last night was when he urged you to contact your congressmen and you did. lawmaker's websites were cra

carol costello joins us from washington. carol, great question here. a lot of people are looking at what is taking place in d.c., and just wondering, are we at the pres miss? >> ask speaker john boehner who is calling the shots in the debt ceiling debate, and it would be the tea party. its members told boehner they don't like to raise the debt ceiling, and some don't want to raise the debt limit under any circumstances period. michele bachmann leads the tea party caucus. >> washington has their fingers in their ears right now. they are not listening to the american people. that's why i am adamant. i will vote no on increasing the debt ceiling. we need sanity back in washington. >> but wait a minute, a cnn orc poll shows 1% of voters show they are active members of the tea party, and only 27% say they support the tea party,et minority rules, and they need to pass a debt ceiling, and they need those votes to pass it, and everybody is fighting among themselves. >> that is not fair to the american people, to hold out and say we won't agree to raising the d

carol costello is live nearby with some of those people. rol. >> yes, you're talking to another regular american, that would be me. i'm at port canaveral, about 15 miles from the kennedy space center. people have been gathering here for literally days. this is a beach right off of the highway and all of these people are hoping that they'll -- that the space shuttle finally lifts off this morning because they'll have a fantastic view from here. take a look out over the water. you probably can't see it, but i can see the space shuttle between the trees over the ocean. when it finally lifts off it will be one beautiful sight. people have come to this little tiny slip of beach from all over the country and ricky, if you turn this way, these people down here are from st. louis, canada, you're from orlando, tampa, pittsburgh. i love that. >> where are you from? >> orlando. >> these people are from seattle. we're going to talk to them in just a second, brad and donna. over there, those people are from? st. louis. so brad, i'm going to talk to you.

carol costello is in maryland where the baltimore ravens are training.s. what is the mood like? >> reporter: i know, i am pretty lucky today, suzanne. it seems very quiet here i know, but there is a lot of action going on inside that building. that's the ravens training facility. administrators are busy at work, expected to sign 30 players. they are dealing with free agencies. the players likely will not report here until 6:00 p.m. eastern time, and they will have a meeting tomorrow they will take to the practice field. most players say they are overjoyed to be back and don't have a bit of apprehension. if you were feeling pangs of anxiety, especially the quarterback who is baltimore's union republic, he spent a lot of time in negotiations and is worried about retaliation. >> it's not a secret that the guys over the years of the relationship with the players association, guys in the forefront become expendable, and so i am sure my day is coming. >> we will just have to wait and see what happens. the real bummer for fans here in baltimore, suzanne, is tha
