bill neely, our thanks to you. >>> joining me now, carol lee, correspondent, at the g7 in france and dave leventhal, senior political reporter. carol, first to you. do you know if anything came out of that working session on the global economy that president trump was asking for? >> well, we noah cording to the president that there was a large discussion about trade and other issues. in terms of his meetings, his bilateral meetings ro boris johnson and prime minister abe of japan, he signaled that they're close on a trade deal with japan, bilateral trade deal with japan and said that they're making progress towards a trade agreement with the uk as it looks to exit the european union by the end of october. overall, generally the president has taken a far more softer tone than we saw when he was heading into this summit. he was very lamb bass particular. he's been critical of the summits. he's gone in and been a disrupter on the stage. so far he's been very kind. he said perhaps his best meeting yet ever with president macron france. his 90-minute lunch they had yesterday. you can see

for more, let's go get the latest from the g7 and nbc's carol lee who's there in biarritz, france. carol, what has been the temperature on these topics, the economy front and center? >> reporter: well, look, the economy is on the minds of all of these leaders as they gather here for the g7. there's a lot of pressure on president trump in particular because of his trade war with china. there's concern among particularly european leaders who have seen their economy soften lately, that this -- if there their trade war continues -- if this trade war continues it's going to be a further drag on their economies. you have that hanging over the summit overall. you have the president having individual meetings with various world leaders whether it's angela merkel of germany or prime minister abe of japan where he's going to be talking about unilateral trade issues. and one in particular that was being very closely watched is the president's meeting tomorrow with the new prime minister of the u.k., boris johnson, who's known the president, the two consider each other friends, but they're tryi

carol lee, i would like to bring you in here. this working dinner tonight. what do you think will be on the agenda there? >> well, i think that the president made sure that trade and the economy are on top of the agenda because -- and it was already going to be a big topic at this summit, but yesterday when he and the chinese government escalated this trade war, it really put the issue front and center. you have a number of these world leaders who are members of the g7 who are concerned about their own economy softening. we have seen it in europe. we have a number of leaders who are worried that this president will slap tariffs on their goods. he has threatened to do it with german cars, he has threatened with french wine and he has threatened with the chinese. the clouds that have been gathering in terms of economic indicators, that will be front and center. then the individual side discussions and disputes the president is having with various leaders who are going to be at this dinner and at the summit for the next couple of days, that also will be part of

. >> carol lee this has been a krus thing that you have written about. recent years, allies have become frenemies. how has the president's inability to get along with other world leaders, to broker the kind of relationships that have bolstered the international community in the past. if you look at the way president trump approached, say, german chancellor angela merkel, he was critical of her during her campaign, that continued once he took office. there wasn't an attempt to forge a relationship there. at the last g7 summit in canada afterwards he was sharply critical of the prime minister trudeau, after that summit we saw emmanuel macron try to have this bromance with the president, he tried to forge a friendship with him, that's the language in which he felt he speaks, that is what is important to him. that fell apart. he couldn't get him to come around on the iran deal. the president withdrew from that. he withdrew from the paris climate accord, prime minister abe is another one, there's been rounds of golf, a sumo wrestling tournament, he tried to f
