we spoke with carol simpson who moderated debates in the past?nd she said oh, yeah. >> i think it's interesting when the moderators start asking hillary clinton about corruption, the fbi scandal, the clinton foundation. we never got answers to that and that may ignite some fireworks, because depending on how she answers, mr. trump may want to press that. because american people are looking for answers to what in my judgment is the most sophisticated form of political corruption we have ever seen. because it doesn't involve just hillary. it involves bill clinton, and the two of them are out there, basically, collecting money through the political process, promising the voters one thing, delivering other things. very sophisticated. i think this is going to be a key issue and that could create fireworks, depending on how she answers. >> all right, and david, lastly to you. you said you pitched president obama some debate lines. what did that entail and what is happening here as far as those aides of donald trump/hillary clinton, pitching lines, as w

let's bring in brian stelter and carol simpson to talk about that. do you think he's feeling at the moment? >> i think he's feeling a little bit worse than i am. i am so excited and so anxious, i have got butterflies. i'm just waiting for this debate but i'm sure he probably has them, too. it's a scary thing to have to do what you have to do, what he has to do. >> i have heard that lester holt is shutting out all the chatter, he's in a dark room somewhere preparing. >> that's right. i tried to talk to him about this last week. he has not given any interviews about his plan. he knows how to relax. he's a bass guitar player. i bet he brought his guitar with him for unwinding through this. he has an incredibly tough task ahead of him. in some ways a no-win situation but he's working for the viewers at home. i think he knows that. he's surrounded by a great team of people helping him prepare and he knows what he's doing. >> this is so different from when you moderated that debate with george h.w. bush and bill clinton and ross perot. this time the two can

it's interesting, hugh, because you have been talking about that in your conversation also with carol simpsonhow much fact checking should come into play, is that going to be much of the focus? are we going to focus on which versions of these candidates are going to be coming up to set the tone for this? >> the left and secretary clinton supporters are urging lester holt to fact check. what they mean by that is, go after donald trump different ly than secretary clinton. i would suggest they should rethink that. if secretary says as she often does, i does not sent or receive anything marked classified, do they really want lester holt to say, secretary clinton, that's a lie and director comey has testified. if she says, i turned over all my work-related e-mails, do they want lester holt to say, that's a lie, and director comey has testified as much. i don't like fact checking by moderators. i want the candidates to candidate fact check each other, because the opportunities for embalance ae imbalance and the opportunity to call something a fact, which is a debatable set of facts is too great. i
