i love north carolina. i went to college and grad school in the state, which means that a core part of my education took place in north carolina. it also means that i came of age politically in north carolina. the first time i ever cast a vote for the president of the united states, i cast that vote in the state of north carolina. and during my time as a north carolinaen, i was an escort for women seeking abortion, so when the protestors would come out and fight for women to seek medical attention in a difficult time, we would walk with these women, help them to walk the gauntlet, so those three things, education, voting rights, and reproductive rights, those are all part of my north carolina experience and it's why i love bev perdue. when i look at this woman, the first woman governor of north carolina, a democrat in charge, when the assembly is controlled by republicans for the first time in more than a century, and i say you are it. you and your uncommonly steely back bone are the thin blue line standing

but why did south carolina secede? is and, you know, i don't have any ancestors who fought in the war. i wish i did, but i don't. um, my grandfather was from russia, and somebody told me one time they had ancestors that fought in the revolution. i said, i do too, the russian revolution. [laughter] but anyway, well, you know, everybody doesn't have ancestors before the revolution. but why did south carolina secede? you know, a lot of our southern friends, particularly sons of confederate veterans and heritage crowd who i love and i love reenactors, and they're great people, really want secession to be about something other than what it was about. and so this is a debate, you know, that's pretty hot and heavy. um, and that really wasn't about slavery, it was really about states' rights, and you've heard all that. it really was about slavery, it really was about race, and it really was about the racial caste system that every white southerner had a stake in. and the thing i find somewhat -- i can't understand about this a

let me talk about north carolina for a minute. the first congressional maps proposed by a republican controlled legislature in north carolina at actually increased the minority percentage and both of the state's two congressional districts. throughout the state, african- american leaders were unhappy about that. the reason is because they felt it was actually training the influence from other congressional districts in the state. where they had a history being able to elect a candidate of choice and a district that was 42% african-american, they do not want it to be what they called packed into a 50% black district. an interesting contrast is with the situation with latino voters in nevada, where there is a question of whether or not the will make this trade-off between being a majority in a single district or having a greater influence in more than one district. i said i wanted to talk about technology. looking at this process as it unfolds, i expected that technology would make it easier for folks to draw a map, but i think it i
