i'm joined now by north carolina governor josh stein. governor, thank you so much for being with us, and congratulations on your new job. >> thank you. >> you've got a lot on your plate right now. what sort of weather impacts are you expecting in your state? what are you bracing for? what kind of help are you anticipating? you're going to have to dole out? >> yeah, we're worried about freezing rain and ice accumulation, particularly in the mountains. >> the northern part of the mountains, especially. we are braced for whatever comes our way. and our emergency management team is ready to provide whatever help is necessary. but the consequences of this storm really underscore the urgency for us to respond to hurricane helene, which was just a massive, devastating storm of immense consequence. more than 100 lives lost, $60 billion in damages. it's just an insane amount of money. thousands, tens of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed, private roads and bridges, some 8000 small businesses lost out on billions of dollars of revenue. vital

what happened in south carolina? yes, boston was very strange it was the only city that had a big fight over the tea that it couldn't resolve all the other places the tea ships went. they found a resolution, some sort of coming to terms between the local customs officials, the and the governor, the tea merchants that were set to receive it, and the sons of liberty and the patriot organization in south carolina. the tea shipped arrived christopher gadsden, the sons of liberty campaigned against it and they had a huge meeting in the exchange, which was large building that housed customs house facilities on the ground floor and above was the main meeting hall. it served the same political purposes this old southwood and they resolved that they were definitely going to let the tea in and wow, the firebrands and politicians signs were yakking away upstairs in the great hall of the exchange south carolina merchants unloaded duty british tea off of the that had these india company tea so not the company's tea but other priv

and you have been in one of those positions in north carolina. and i think it would be useful for them to hear why this makes your job at cdc complicated, maybe it makes it more interesting, but tell the group a little bit about how the cdc operates on the ground. dr. cohen: sure. i think we have all learned lessons about how decentralized our public health infrastructure is. and sometimes that is great and sometimes that is challenging. as dr. varmus was referring to. but what i would say is that 80% of the dollars that come to cdc end up going out to states and localities, whether it is to improve their data systems, or to work on something like overdose prevention. so there are many ways in which, when you hear about cdc budget and what does that mean, yes, it could have impacts for the agency but 80% of those dollars are domestic dollars going to our states and localities. so when you hear a cut to cdc, which is on paper, the house budget, again, which is currently sitting there, we are on a continuing resolution, the house budget has a 22% c
