inside the state house, a morale---and pay boost---may be on the way for thousands of south carolina state employees. midlands senators are pushing a plan to give those workers one of their biggest pay raises in more than a decade. jack kuenzie has more from today's announcement at the state house. dawndy---state employees got a modest $800 dollar bonus last year. but they've only been given small raises two out of the last seven years. in fact you might have to go since state government granted workers a raise of as much as five per cent. but that is what a bipartisan group of senators thinks is possible this year because the state has a large surplus. their proposal would provide raises at state agencies and colleges---and cost about $75 million dollars. richland republican john courson is one of the measure's leading sponsors. i do think there's some sentiment that state employees have not been rewarded but have not whined about it, have not complained about it because of the great recession of 2008. we have the revenue stream now to do it. we can do it without any tax increase, so let'

south carolina state employees easier time paying their bills if a group of lawmakers have their way. those legislators are behind a pay raise proposal that would tap into the state's large budget surplus. jack kuenzie says the proposed pay hike would help make up for some lean budget years. he's in the newsroom with more. dawndy, state government has been through some difficult times. downsizing, the recession, tight budgets and more often than not---state employees had to give up even minimal pay raises. state government has about 35 thousand employees. three fourths making under $40 thousand a year. and only twice in the past seven years have they gotten any kind of pay increase. this budget year is different. the state has a significant surplus---and senate members say they can take $75 million from that surplus and provide workers with a five per cent raise. we have balanced many budgets on state employees. when the state retirement accounts was short, we called on paying into that same account. last year the best we could do is to give an $800 dollar bonus and it still was not f

south carolina department of transportation was able to open seven closed roads yesterday. currently, the state has 39 closed roads in 19 counties because of flooding. this includes only one primary route closure - which is south carolina highway 193 in saluda county. crews will continue to make repairs to damaged roads as weather conditions allow. in addition, scdot is also monitoring water levels and bridge conditions from the water release at the lake murray dam. you can expect traffic congestion and delays if you're traveling on trenholm road. all three northbound lanes of trenholm road between coker street and forest drive are closed for a water main repair. drivers should use a detour at coker street. use caution if you're headed that way. time is ticking for victims of the october floods to apply for fema assistance -- and administration says there is plenty of money to go around. charles molineaux spoke with fema representatives on how important it is to get your name in the pile. charles: a lot of this involves documentation, how important is it to have all this documentation, or can y

the palmetto state's jobs picture is staying strong. today the south carolina department of employment and workforce reported that unemployment in the state stayed unchanged in december at 5.5 percent. while that number stayed the same, the number of people working in the state actually went up by more than 10-thousand. nationally, the unemployment rate held steady at 5 percent in december. 100 new jobs are coming to a company that will make cushions and pillows for outdoor and indoor furniture is relocating to the area. 3-i products announced it is investing three million dollars to renovate an existing building near interstate 77. the plant is expected to fully open in the spring. jobs will be created over five years. there will soon be a new man in charge of the chapin police department. today the town announced it hired seth zeigler to lead the department. zeigler is a chapin native and has been serving as a captain of the patrol dvision for the west columbia police department. he worked in there for the last 17 years. his father, bill zeigler, was the chie

inside the state house- south carolina's lawmakers are back to work with a full agenda. the legislative session kicked off today. will whitson takes a look at day 1. many lawmakers and some staffers described today as the first day of school- the first day of session entails getting bills in order and getting organized for the year ahead. but today's session began with a protests on an issue that was resolved last year. a group of protesters, wielding confederate flagag reading "no votes for turncoats" and a banner made out of petitions- calling for the protection of confederate monuments. the group, which included former south carolina state representative richard protect confederate statewide, saying they didn't believe lawmakers would stop at the confederate battle flag- which they voted to remove from state house grounds last summer. strikes south carolina state ununersity presented their $128 million budget to lawmakers today. the university is on track for a balanced budget but it is still on probation for accreditation. in order to meet the fiscal requirements for accreditation the schools asking lawmakers to forgive them $12 llion in loans used to pay off offender debt. the budget also included 14 million and one time, money for deferred maintenance projects. at the end of the meeting we told the board of trustees. they need to begin their search for a permanent president and address that cost in their budget. here's what she had to say about if the president could be picked for the spot. >> i have no idea and i don't care about that. because with permanency comes a different level of decision- making. it is not fair. in my opinion for a president to come in the last part of the third year and the saddled with whatever decisions have been made. >> school leaders plan on discussing their search for a permanent president at their meeting next week. >>> the unemployment rate is holding steady and ended last
