governor morehead was the governor of north carolina from 1841 to 1845. he was popular governor through his ideas of reform and industry and human rights. his political career really began early through his education in law. after he graduated from the caldwell academy here in greensboro he went on to the university of north carolina in chapel hill. he graduated from there as a lawyer. quickly found more business here in greensboro. he found his wife here. quickly found a place in government. when he was here as an elected official he worked closely with a large quaker community. he took on issues of internal improvement in the state. he took up issues with slavery, which is unusual for a politician in the south working with the quakers. he took, adopted other important issues to the quakers such as education. that really began to form his political platform. governor morehead was one of the first candidates tahat ran a statewide candidacy. he was a great orator and personal personable. he won by a good margin and started his term in 1841. governor morehe

lee is to get the army of northern virginia down into north carolina. that was hit objective upon leaving richmond and petersburg and that never changed. lee can't make that turn to the south because union forces keep blocking the way. the union armies are pursuing lee behind him but they have also gotten around in front of him by the time they get to appomattox courthouse. this map shows the final battle which takes place on the morning of april 9th. confederates initially pushed the union troopers back but as republican reenforcements arrive they realize they cannot breakthrough and the army surrounded on three sides with the river on the other side. lee and grant will meet that very afternoon of april 9th. one of the things that makes the appomattox surrender unique is we have this active campaign and right up to the last minute there was fighting. we don't know who the last casualty was. there's probably no way to know because fighting spread out all around the village. one of the possible candidates is 18-year-old william montgomery montgomery, a s

not just in charleston south carolina or south carolina in whole. but it's a consistent narrative across the country. if you read the officer's statement, that is consistent with officer statements across the country. of an immediate fear of bodily harm. and that is the supreme court standard used to exonerate many officers. now, in cases where video evidence is preserved, and you reconcile that with those statements you find that they're totally inconsistent. last year we had a shooting of an unarmed citizen, african-american male pulled over for a seat belt violation. and if you read the highway patrolman's, officer's statement in that case you would have thought he was a hero. but when you look at the dashboard video camera it's totally inconsistent. this is an issue that we must address nationally. because i suspect it's a larger problem. >> and obviously you got a start at home if you have a culture issue there, you need to deal with it that's why the investigation of these other officers and the leadership that came out echoing that officer's

south carolina law enforcement division arrested the officer. his murder charge brings a possible sentence of 30 years to life in prison with the death penalty. joining me now is brian hicks. brian, thank you for being here. the mayor and police chief of north charleston called a press conference to announce the imminent arrest and charging of murder. do you know when they became away of the video and how they got their hands on it? >> they found out about the video just this afternoon when someone from the state law enforcement division showed it to them, and in fact i spoke to the mayor around 3:00 and he hadn't seen it yes. they knew what was in it and quickly made up their minds to fire the officer and charge him with murder. >> the state law enforcement division is essentially like state troopers in south carolina, right? and they also handled earlier prosecution or ongoing prosecution of a south carolina police officer that shot a black man in a gas station that was caught on camera, as well. >> yes, they're like south carolina's fbi. and
