andrew denson western carolina university. the theme of this year's georgia history festival is about the importance of place in georgia, and we're going to be really focusing today on the experience of the cherokee people in georgia history. what happened to them and the way that georgians have remembered their history and their experience particularly with removal coming forward all the way up into the present. i want to welcome dr. denton to our program andrew welcome and thanks so much for being here with us. thanks, dan. it's a really good to talk with you all. let me give andrew a quick introduction as i mentioned. he's a professor of history at western carolina university where he teaches courses on native american and united states history. he participates in their cherokee studies program as you might expect he is the author of this book published by the university of north carolina, press it's called monuments to absence cherokee removal and the contest over southern memories. i mentioned published by the university

when the first south carolina starts doing escalating. it's raids in november of 1862 hunter instructs them to capture prominent white citizens so that he can hold them as hostages in hilton head for the safety of his black soldiers and so he collects hostages from beginning of the war to try to protect so then something i'm kind of a different way of answering that question when foster and sam jones who's the confederate commander of the department of south carolina george in florida in 1864. they try to conduct a whole bunch of prisoner exchanges, even when they're superiors, tell them not to so one of the things i talk about in the book foster is so traumatized by i mean, he's the commander on the ground. for hearing the first reports about andersonville and what's happening at macon? and so in addition to trying retaliation, he also just desperately wants there to be a prisoner exchange. so he keeps trying to arrange and exchange of prisoners with his counterpart and both of them get so out of control and and do so many special exchan

that's the story of warren county, north carolina.ighly toxic chemicals seeped into the ground there after the state decided to dump thousands of truckloads of soil contaminated with pcb's. our special contributor joie chen has the story of how the community came together in the battle for environmental justice. joie: in a community where growing and god share space in the landscape, justice did roll down like the waters -- though it traveled a twisted path to get here. from ancient times, the tuscarora indians saw healing powers in the mineral waters here. by the late 1800's, spas touted warren county waters as a cure-all for anything from -- for almost anything. the rural community remained best known for health and healing until 1982 and a fork in the road. where was the site? >> the site was down this road right here. about a mile and a half. joie: north carolina created a 25-acre dumpsite for toxic chemicals, pcb's -- which were known cancer-causing agents -- why did they pick warren county? >> i think for three reasons. we were

well, that is north carolina.eme court said, we are gonna protect the citizens of north carolina from this extreme form of partisan gerrymandering. using our state constitution because that is what chief justice roberts told us to do. and yet, now we are back before the u.s. supreme court. whether the state supreme court of north carolina can use this a constitution protected voters. >> and to connect it back to what we saw in 2020. there is two connections here. one is that the fringes version of this theory put forth by john eastman who is now facing you know, possible criminal investigation. is that, state legislators can basically do whatever they, what they say they have plenty of power, absolute power, to basically say, going, from the voids who just elected joe biden in the state, no, we are not doing that. and then the kind of softer version of that was the job hollies and a ted cruz's, who sort of dressed up the coup in this fringe theory, that's what, we'll state legislators and state courts particularly

ross of north carolina. the speaker pro tempore: pursuant to house resolution 1224, the gentlewoman from north carolina, ms. ross, and a member opposed each will control five minutes. the chair now recognizes the gentlewoman from north carolina. ms. ross: thank you, mr. speaker. pfas chemicals effect our drinking water, our crops, the air we breathe and the products we bring into our homes. as members know, pfas are a large class of chemicals that are highly persistent and mobile in the environment. they're commonly referred to as forever chemicals. pfas have contaminated more than 2,300 sites across 49 states, polluting the drinking water of an estimated 200 million americans, including thousands of households in my home state of north carolina, and at fort bragg in north carolina. forever chemicals have been associated with a wide range of serious health effects, including a probable link with cancer, thyroid disease, lower fertility and more. over 500 pfas are included on the federal inventory of chemical
