rob fowler, chief meteorologist at wcbd—tv in south carolina, updated us on the situation in south carolinabout 2a hours ago, we were watching what was hurricane ian kinda coming up the coast on the atlantic ocean, heading our way. we had some rain and things really ramped up overnight and through the early morning hours as we saw the rain and the winds really pick up, and i would say probably by ten o'clock our time — am — all the way until about two o'clock in the afternoon, it was, as we say, rocking and rolling. we had very, very strong winds. we had a wind gust of 92 mph on folly beach, which is one of our barrier islands — we're right on the atlantic ocean — and a lot of wind gusts right into the 60s and 70 mile per hour range, so it has been quite a day here and i guess when i — ijust went home for dinner after a long day of broadcasting and in my neighbourhood, there's branches and stuff everywhere, debris everywhere, so it didn't hit us as hard as florida but certainly, it did hit us pretty hard. i was just going to say how does it compare to what happened in florida? well, fortuna

hurricane ian made land fowl south of georgetown south carolina at 2:05 p.m.ith peak wind 85 miles per hour. it is a first hurricane to make landfall in south carolina since matthew in 2016. some of the highest observed peak wind gusts were 92 miles per hour in charleston har barry, 87 miles per hour at the bay. and 85 miles an hour at fort sumpter, 73 miles per hour at folly beach. 69 miles per hour at charleston airport, 61 miles per hour at spring peer and 58 miles an hour at north myrtle beach. some areas inland experienced wind gusts 56 miles per hour. mcintyre joint national guard base 51 miles. all of the strong wind brought down a significant amount of trees, even as far inland was the midland of south carolina. a storm surge was significant along the george down and orey county coasts and the tide at spring made pier reached the third highest value on record only surpassed by hurricane hugo in 1989 and matthew in 2016. storm surge inundation, 6.42 feet above ground level add measured at spring made, and higher once water levels are sur surveyed. rain

carolina. want to show you those images out of charleston. it was thought that this hurricane was going to be making landfall in charleston, devastating this beautiful historic city under water. well, yes, they got the water anyway. the storm surge. on a good day with some thunderstorms, they typically flood, but in this situation, it is a little more serious than that. but it did make, it being hurricane category 1, hurricane ian, it didn't look all that impressive, did make landfall along the north central coast right around the georgetown area, just a little bit past the peak of high tide. but we did see heavy rainfall amounts. right now we're seeing gusty winds across central north carolina, there have been some trees reported down in orangeburg, south carolina, lynchburg power lines reported down there as well. so we have this large shield of rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, even though it is post-tropical cyclone ian. it still has a little bit of punch left with it, so don't underesti

when the first south carolina starts doing escalating. it's raids in november of 1862 hunter instructs them to capture prominent white citizens so that he can hold them as hostages in hilton head for the safety of his black soldiers and so he collects hostages from beginning of the war to try to protect so then something i'm kind of a different way of answering that question when foster and sam jones who's the confederate commander of the department of south carolina george in florida in 1864. they try to conduct a whole bunch of prisoner exchanges, even when they're superiors, tell them not to so one of the things i talk about in the book foster is so traumatized by i mean, he's the commander on the ground. for hearing the first reports about andersonville and what's happening at macon? and so in addition to trying retaliation, he also just desperately wants there to be a prisoner exchange. so he keeps trying to arrange and exchange of prisoners with his counterpart and both of them get so out of control and and do so many special exchan
