but as you mentioned, this is an exclusive just to south carolina. we have also seen these weather conditions in tennessee, georgia and north carolina as well, especially over the last seven days. this is really peak fire season right now in this region. the la nina weather conditions make it ripe for these fires to just continuously burn. it's extremely dry and incredibly windy. and the fire officials, especially in south carolina, were reporting that it was incredibly erratic, that embers in one area were just flying off to other areas and sparking other fires. but we do know that as of right now, that number 175 has been reduced to about 163 with a 30% containment. so it looks like that things are moving in a positive direction. and there is a cold front expected to come in with some much needed rain to this area. so hopefully the fire officials and the emergency responders can get things under control in the next 24 hours. chris. >> priya, thank you for that. bill. what are the conditions today for fire risk in the south? >> much better because o

cnn's kyung lah went to north carolina to see it firsthand. >> my job. brings in about 75% of our household income. with two small children, one still in daycare. we have a lot of childcare expenses. um, so not a lot of savings. >> ruth garfinkel in. >> durham, north. >> carolina, is not a federal employee. that didn't stop what happened. life changed in january for you? >> yes. >> i worked for a usaid contractor, and without usaid funding contracts, then there's no no job for me. >> she's taken out a home equity line of credit on her north carolina house to now stay afloat. her family part of an economic ripple effect of federal cuts. felt acutely in the so-called research triangle of north carolina, where a cnn review shows in the last fiscal year, usaid agreed to pay more than $1 billion to groups based in the state. >> real things are happening. people are losing their jobs now. >> walk with durham's mayor through the city's downtown. and you quickly learned there are a lot of ruth garfinkel's here. people who don't work for the federal government, b

it's a real issue in eastern north carolina. but the real issue is also when somebody can't get benefits and they're put off their doctor's appointments for 8 or 10 months when they can't get care. that is where an agency has failed. we're trying to get an agency that actually works for the people, that is supposed to be taken care of. >> yeah, you have camp lejeune there. you certainly are aware 30% of the federal workforce is veterans. and so far, the firings have not accounted for any veteran status, which means you can kind of extrapolate that it means thousands of veterans have been fired across the federal workforce. president trump was asked about this on friday if he is tracking how many vets have been fired. and here's what he said. >> we are and and we take good care of our veterans. and we're watching that very carefully. and we hope it's going to be a smaller number as possible. but we're taking care of our veterans. we love our veterans. we're going to take good care of them. >> what are you hearing from voters abou

are in south carolina.s battling more than 170 wildfires as the governor here declared a state of emergency. this view of the blazes, captured during a plane landing in myrtle beach after powerful wind gusts approaching 30 miles an hour over the weekend, spread flames that reached several dozen feet into the sky. and we witnessed just how easily this kind of dry brush can fuel the fire. we've watched these flames multiply in just the last couple of minutes. the south carolina forestry commission says the fires have been worsened by a perfect storm of windy and dry conditions. talk to me about the conditions that firefighters are up against. >> well, it's very erratic. you saw it. the flames were low and all of a sudden they jumped up. right. so wind changes, wind changes can do that. and this kind of a fuel type as we call it. so it can be a little scary. >> towers of smoke from wildfires can be seen for miles in north carolina, as well as the region hopes the most dangerous fire conditions are under contro
