and caroline holt from the international federation of the red cross and red crescent society. murad, thank you forgetting up to be part of this. i know it's been a stressful few days for you. how is your family doing and what are they telling you about what happened? >> thank you for having me. my family, thankfully, is very safe. they were not in the house when the quake happened. from my communications with them, the devastation is rampant. everybody is affected. everybody knows somebody who either lost some family members, some friends or lost a home. the situation is very dire, and i don't even think the horrible images that are shown on tv and on social media tell the real story of what's happening. in terms of human lives that are lost, the number is climbing. officially it's around 2,500 people who have lost their lives. i think at the end of the day, when you talk to people on the ground, they know for a fact there are people still buried under the rubble. people that used to make sounds are not making sounds anymore. so they cannot be declared officially dead until th

caroline holt is the global director for operations at the international federation of the red crossscent. she says calculating the exact numbers of dead will be very difficult. this is a huge disaster and would have overwhelmed many nations if it happened. the unprecedented levels of rains plus the weaknesses in infrastructure we have seen that have created this disaster are huge. the numbers will unfortunately, no doubt the number of dead will go up during the course of today as the picture starts to become clear and the floodwaters start to recede. but it's very difficult to put a final number on those dead and missing. we don't know how many people would have moved far away from this scene in order to make themselves safe. and it would have necessitated a journey of a long way in order to make one safe in this scenario because of the extent of the floodwater, but it's really unclear right now. i think we know those numbers are between 2000 and 5000 dead, and you can see it must be a very difficult situation to quantify correctly. we just want to bring you a little more on our top
