the question is, do north carolinians have the right to have medicare? >> the rhetoric, to call senator scott, to imply that he is a ventriloquist's dummy, is that going to keep the issues on on employment, obamacare? >> what reverend barber said was in frustration. >> do you think he should apologize? >> he has already spoken to the tim scott issue, quite adequately. he has made his statement, and that is where we are. i cannot focus on things like that. what i am focused on is helping reverend barber keeping his coalition going. getting the people in north carolina to appreciate what they are trying to do on the moral mondays to focus on medicare, medicaid, and school funding for public education. the plethora of issues out there that affect the lives of north carolinians every day. >> one of the things that i noticed about the meeting last week was that around a table for the summer rights organizations i noticed that there were a majority led by women. >> of course. >> it didn't used to be like that. in the past the majority of the civil rights organ

the movement grew as north carolinians from all walks of life joined in, taking part in over 30 rallies assembly and signed into law by republican governor pat mccrory, from passing the worst voter suppression law, to cutting taxes on the rich but all of those policies still remain in place today. what will the movement look like in 2014? joining me now is the head of the north carolina naacp, reverend william barber. thank you so much for being with me. >> hello, my friend. how are you, karen? >> i'm well, sir. i had the to speak with julian bond. he said "i wish this activism had more outbursts than just in north carolina and florida. you wish it was 20 times as great, but to see these things that are going on, it's exciting. these tactics are tried and true. they worked in the past and they'll work now." one of the things i loved about that is sort of that bridge from past to present and the way that this movement is really grass roots. and i think as you've talked about, it's really about organizing people not so much along partisan lines but really around values and the issues that

since republicans took control, 500,000 north carolinians lost medicaid coverage and another 900,000 earned income tax credit. after the state legislature eliminated it. and the legislature passed new laws further limiting women's access to abortion and restricting voters' rights. joining me now, the nation's ari berman, who attended this saturday's march. so moral mondays merged into this giant event on saturday. >> yeah. so for the last eight years they've been holding this annual rally called the hk on j rally but this was the first time they did it with the moral monday coalition present. so you had all this energy in 2013, all these protests done at the state legislature. they traveled all around the state opposing the legislature's policies. and now 2014's the kickoff for a new year of moral monday. and this was the first real event. and they encouraged people to come not only just to north carolina but really all around the country to make a statement of how big this movement really is now. >> i want to look at the poll down there indicating that the republicans in north carol
