carolyn tyler has the story.>reporter: you are looking at about 1,000 phone books salvaged from the dump. symbol of the one and a half million yellow pages left on door steps throughout san francisco every year. if they were stacked up, the books would equal the height of 300 transamerica pyramid. according to supervisor david chu. >> in addition to the environmental impact, this has a very real cost to san francisco. total cost to dispose of phone book to recycle phone book in our city is estimated to be over 1 million dollars a year. >>reporter: he's proposing new law requiring distributors to get permission from customers for example by phone or mail before dropping off the books. the industry is threatening a legal fight. >> we think penaltyizing one form of advertising and not others is inherently unfair. >>reporter: bail bonds company advertises in the yellow pages. she believes that if the phone book isn't in every home it could impact her business. >> another form of advertising is also under scrutiny. ma

. >> >> today, i am asking that we adjourned power meeting in memory of carolyn marks. it is my duty to report of the passing of a truly legendary figure in san francisco politics. she passed away yesterday morning and she was 90 years old. she is someone who actually saw several times that i would often campaigned on the same cycle as her son. she's the wife of milton marks jr.. she was a trailblazer in politics and in civic organizations. she has been in a host of organizations. she was born in providence rhode island and she attended bryn mawr college after the outbreak of world war ii. she took the place of a man who got drafted, as she puts it, in the state department. she moved to be a part of the staff of the united nations. the secretary of state was your supervisor. in 1954, she met milton -- and a married one-year later. she was a dynamo behind her husband's career and she -- to spend time as a state senator. it was a political fear that she shined. she was a fixture of san francisco politics for decades. she also served our city as a former president of the c

carolyn? >>> it's not a football or basketball game but a national robotics competition. the students are getting help from a company that used robotics to help revolutionize brain surgery. >> we can't run around the floor looking like this. >> maybe now it looks like a step ladder but in a few days this science advisor swears it's going to be a full-blown robot. >> we have to put this into a bag. it gets sealed and we don't get to touch it again until we go to the tournament. >> these students are crafting their enry for the national first robotics competition. teams design their bot to perform a goal this, year's challenge boils down to a game of ring toss. >> this is kind of crazy if you think about the fact that the robot is only going to be this big. >> romy is engineering software to help the robot. last year's model used a camera to help it play soccer. this time getting the ring to the pole is only half of the battle. >> so we're planning to do this by kind of -- fork system that. will be able to carry these rings up to the heights. >> the students are developing
