carolyn tyler joins us live with the latest incident. carolyn? >> reporter: yes, that latest incident happened right down the block there at van ness and lombard. it involved a bus and a pedestrian. police say the driver is cooperating, but they're not giving us very many details. but they do say that there is a surveillance camera on that bus that should play a key part in their investigation. it's the 18th pedestrian death this year. a 51-year-old san francisco woman satisfied as lori helmer was jogging when she was hit by a golden gate transit bus. it happened this morning as the driver was turning left on to van ness avenue. >> the driver is one of our senior drivers. he's been with the agency for more than 35 years and he has a very good safety record. he's obviously distraught right now. >> reporter: mo couture is also shaken. her office is across the street and she has seen close called. >> it's very confusing with the lights and the turns of the cars. the cars really whip through here very quickly. a lot of them run the lights here. >> re

carolyn? >> reporter: ama, the primary factor is age. hundreds of ficus trees including the one that fell behind me were planted on san francisco sidewalks back in the '60s but all that stopped in the 90s when city officials realized the roots were buckling the sidewalks and the trees were prone to fall. even a little bit of rain and wind can topple an aging ficus tree. this one in the mission fell on a man this morning pinning him and the branches and taking down a muni line. >> in my professional opinion, most of these trees should be removed. they're too tall and they're too hazardous. >> reporter: there is a plan in the works to replace at least 200 of the oldest ficus. the cost, $500 to $1,500 per tree. >> it's really critical. we're seeing a huge number of trees fall this year compared to other years and so they've gotten to that age we really need to start addressing the concern. >> reporter: residents in the western edition say three of the trees have toppled in their neighborhood so far this year. including the one this morning
