joining me now is new york congressman carolyn maloney. it's great to have you here. as we talk about this, you have spearheaded legislation in this effort trying to move the ball forward. we have mayor bloomberg's group pouring some $12 million into tv ads since newtown. you have sponsored numerous bills to prevent gun violence and bring reform. when you hear about this do you feel intimidated. >> not at all. >> or reinvigorated to this debate? >> more determined. these are irrational people, but any threat has to be taken seriously. when you see what happened at a town hall meeting in arizona with my colleague, gabby giffords, they have to be treated seriously. but i think the mayor is determined to go forward. i am determined to go forward. it's common sense gun safety legislation. guns against violence has endorsed my bills and we need to continue working on it because it's going to save lives. and how this country cannot act after 20 young innocent children are mowed down in their classroom with their teachers defending them, it's just outrageous. and the respons

joining us now, carolyn maloney from new york, a member of the house oversite government reform committee. congresswoman, thanks for your time tonight. nice to have you here. >> great to be here. >> this was the third hearing on this topic so far. do you feel like you have been getting the answers you need from the irs officials that appeared before your committee? >> well, not yet. those of us that want to get to the facts, we were very disappointed, frustrated she pled the fifth amendment today, but it is her constitutional right, but you have to realize we are now confronting four different investigations, the department of justice has a criminal investigation, the house has an investigation, ig george is going to continue with his audit and investigation, and the senate has investigation. we have hearings when we come back in a week from now with the new director murtle, so there's more to do to get the answers and the truth. >> from what you have been able to discern thus far, obviously more needs to be asked and more needs to be forthcoming from the agency itself, but does it seem t

carolyn maloney of new york. the chair: pursuant to house resolution 216, the gentlelady from new york, mrs. maloney, and a member opposed, will each control five minutes. mrs. maloney: i respect mr. garrett's leadership but i must respectfully and strongly disagree with him on this issue before us today. it seems clear that the intended effect of the republican bill is to cripple the s.e.c. just as it undertakes the very tough and important job of implementing the badly needed reforms we passed in dodd-frank. and may i remind my colleagues that we passed dodd-frank in response to the worst financial crisis in our lifetime, one in which we were at one point losing 700,000 jobs a month and by some estimates the loss was well over $12 trillion. my amendment strikes the underlying bill and puts a sense of congress in its place. my amendment contains findings that very clearly lay out the cost-benefit analysis process that the s.e.c. already has to go through in proposing or adopting a rule. what this bill would do no
