i want to bring in cnn sports correspondent carolyn manno. carolyn, again, this is a bit of new information we have now. they say his heartbeat was restored on the field following a cardiac arrest, your reaction? >> well this confirmation of the cardiac arrest is consistent with what some of our medical experts have been saying. we can't speculate about what this might mean, you, know i would immediately think that it is a bit of good news, but we just don't know, you know, i keep thinking about how the bills have handled this as an organization, how the head coach sean mcdermott handled this moment. i was at home like many people -- you and i have watched a lot of football over the years and something we're wrong and we've been accustomed to have trauma in the nfl we know it is such a violent, game but the nature of this is very different even though it fell under that umbrella of this being a dangerous sport so when you saw sean mcdermott really take matters into his own hands, i mean, the way players reacted, how emotional they were, coveri

carolyn manno, thank you so much. >>> joining us is jason page. jason, good morning. thank you for staying up for us this morning. what's your first reaction -- >> not a problem at all. >> -- when you watched this unfold live. it was just horrifying. >> it took your breath away. i mean, i was literally trembling watching it myself. because you could understand the gravity of it right away when the espn broadcast kept cutting away. they didn't know what to say. they didn't know what to show and the surrounding players made it obvious with the ambulance out there on the field. i've watched football for 20 years and covered sports for that long and never seen anything like this. >> you've talked to cardiologists and er doctors, this looks like some sort of freak accident here. what did they tell you? what makes your heart stop in the middle of a football game? >> well, this is something we've seen, and this is going back to the late '90s they started putting together studies to chronicle these kinds of cases. there's only about 200 that are documented of guys getting hit

cnn sports correspondent carolyn manno is joining this live from new york. for our viewers joining this now, can you explain what it is that made fans and teammates and the other team aware that something unprecedented had happened to hamlin? >> reporter: yeah. i think, you know, americans unfortunately have become desensitized to a certain extent to the violence that's often associated with head trauma in the nfl, but you got the sense very early on, bianca and max, that this was different, not because a different part of the body was targeted but just the way that damar hamlin responded. the video is disturbing. we try to play it as little as possible, but to see him get up and then suddenly collapse on the field and then to have players from both teams completely breakdown. i mean, the emotion was so overwhelming as they crowded around him and watched him essentially be resuscitated from this cardiac arrest incident that the team has since confirmed in the last couple of hours that took place was unlike anything we've ever seen before. i think it was just
