carolyn tyler joins us from city hall with news on this developing situation. carolyn? >> reporter: that sit-down is taking place right now up there on the second floor. the fire chief says she did not meet with the mayor today but is confident he has her back as she struggles to hang on to her job. the heads of every employee group in the san francisco fire department ranging from the black firefighters, the asian, women and gay firefighters, waltzed into san francisco mayor ed lee's office late this afternoon. they were delivering a letter they unanimously agreed to earlier this week, citing a grave crisis of confidence in the direction and leadership of the current administration under chief joanne hayes-white. >> we want to serve the public to the best of our ability and we feel we are not able to do that right now. >> reporter: union leaders say the department is failing to meet its most basic mission of public safety, citing a shortage of ambulances and long wait times for an emergency medical response. but the chief says progress is being made, with the addition

carolyn tyler will have more on this coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00. we will take a look at the impact it will have on the commute. >>> tomorrow a new state law will require drivers to stay three feet away from cyclists. it can be difficult. each year in california, more than 100 cyclists are killed in vehicle collisions. we saw this one today in san francisco. a truck struck the rider of an electric bicycle. the cyclist was taken to the hospital. california's new law will require drivers to stay three feet away and only pass a cyclist at a speed that is quote, reasonable and prudent. violators will be fined. cyclists we talked to are happy with the new law. >> it will definitely keep us safer out there. >> fosters more awareness about bicyclists who share it with traffic. >> in san francisco, lanes are an average of eight feet wide. we tested out the three-foot buffer and found it difficult to stay three feet away from cyclists while remaining in the lane. the driver often had to follow the cyclist for blocks which could lead to serious congestion. >>

live at the golden gate bridge, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >>> a bmw went barreling through the front doors of the comstock saloon on columbus avenue in san francisco this afternoon. two people injured. the driver of the car has been arrested. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live to explain exactly what happened. sergio, close call. >> reporter: yeah, that driver was arrested but it wasn't actually for charges related to this crash. instead, he was taken into custody for an outstanding warrant for drug possession out of sacramento but i will show you, these crews worked really really quick to patch up the gaping hole that was left from the car going into this bar. workers at the comstock were just wrapping up the lunch rush when this red bmw came crashing into the historic saloon. according to police, one customer suffered minor injuries and another was taken to the hospital, but officers didn't have details on those injuries. witnesses say the driver was heading southbound on columbus and completely missed the turn on to pacific avenue. >> i didn't hear any screeching of brake

abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler here with the story. >> reporter: it's been more than 50 years since the equal pay act was passed, yet there is still a huge disparity between women and men. this legislation would help close the gender gap in san francisco. ruth worked as a machinist in san jose in the '90s and says she made $3 an hour less than her male counterpart doing the same job. >> i was outraged. i thought it was very unfair. i was extremely upset about it. >> reporter: she says things really haven't changed that much. according to the latest u.s. census data, the median paycheck of a woman who works full-time is job over $39,000. 78% that of men who earned $50,000. >> power to the people! power to the people! >> reporter: these demonstrators on the steps of san francisco city hall are supporting a new equal pay for equal work measure that will be introduced tomorrow by supervisor david campos. >> our legislation is landmark legislation that is really the first of its kind that says that anyone who contracts with the city must provide information about pay, not only by gender
