stopping cars before the carquinez bridge and diverting traffic to other areas. drivers were sent on long detours that caused a ripple effect with backups throughout the east bay. >> it seems like everywhere you go, you can't go. i don't know what we will do at this point. >> reporter: throughout the afternoon sirens blared. from the air cal fire dropped retardants on the flames and hampers that grass fires that sprung up nearby burning 15 acres. by sundown firefighters spread a layer of foam over the spilled ethanol but just before 7 pm another flareup. >> at one point during the operation we ran out of foam or there was an interruption in the foam supply and water took the foam blanket and opened it up. thus exposing the product to oxygen. and that's why we had that flareup. >> reporter: the incident commander chief dean columbo said davis cripe thousands of gallons of foam on top of that ethanol to smother it and hopefully prevent any other flareups. he also said that cal osha has been called to the scene to help with the investigation into the cause. jana kat

although, you can see the carquinez bridge really well in that shot as well. you can see no traffic going by. you see the hell cop tefr, a lot of helicopter runs dropping retardant over the last couple hours. right now we're seeing water being put on what was burning there, one of the tanks. they definitely want to keep everything cool, very cool, to ensure the intense heat doesn't weaken further structures. >> that was the concern as this went from one tank to the next. they didn't want these other tanks to catch fire. they worked very hard to cool those and keep them from overheating and potentially exploding again like the initial blast or catching fire. they were successful in that regard. as you can tell now, look on the left, they've been spraying non-stop foam and flame retardant there. it looks like it's been snowing there, completely covering that part of the facility. you see two collapsed tankers on the middle of your screen. all this foam that they continue to pour onto what is left of this fire. >> you don't want to tune away right now. we underst

firefighters have gained the upper hand on flames burning near the carquinez bridge. it was big yesterday. but now it is 90 pr-- 90% contained. it shut down traffic near crockett. most of the town of crockett was evacuated but the orders are now lifted. >>> the cpuc telling us a pg&e worker responding to this fire in lafayette saw a downed power line and transformer at the site. that fire did not spare the lafayette tennis club which is a complete loss after the fire roar the through the grounds burning five acres nearby. the club was hosting a youth tennis tournament. witnesses say the winds caused the transformer to fail and that triggered the fire. everyone quickly evacuated. but a quick response from air crews is being credited to keeping the fire from becoming worse. the fire started during the peak of yesterday's gusty winds. >>> and down in southern california, a brush fire zroifing several homes near the getty setter in los angeles. at least four homes have been damages or destroyed and thousands of people including lebron james out of their homes this morning
