superintendent carranza. >> thank you, president norton, and you haven't lost that rolling of the rs, very good. so, good evening, everyone. i have some extended thoughts this evening to kickoff the school year. but needless to say, i and the rest of the staff are very excited for the start of the new school year. a few weeks ago we welcomed back our administrators and this week we welcome all of our teachers back to educating our students and collaborating with their colleagues in preparation for a great school year. we are not starting the school year with a lot of -- we're starting the school year with a lot of strong systems in place to support our students and teachers and we have multi-tiered system of support so that our schools know what it means to have support from a central perspective and our teachers who have the greatest need are getting the modethv services in those communities that have the greatest needs. as the year progresses, we will share more and more information and more details about just how our approach is rolling out. we also have a refreshed strategic plan

carranza.nk you, president norton and good evening everyone and i i have a few thoughts that i would like to share with everyone and listening in the public. last week we were honored to welcome our students back to the classrooms for learning, for the 2013, 14 school year. and i'm very happy to report that the students came back and you can hear the excitement in the air on the students that i visited that day. >> i did have the pleasure of visiting the sites on open day and i could not have been more pleased with the teaching and learning that was happening on the first day. i joined with the parents and children at gratan elementary and i saw so many signs that encourages the students to mroer including a garden to see how the water system works and an interactive computer, and ecology theme and tents inside of a classroom. and i also had the opportunity to be at the middle school where i saw the students in math classes using ipads. to supplement their learning and the ipads in their hands,

superintendent carranza was able to visit her and meet with her last year. i have been privileged to know ruth and her family for more than 20 years. i consider it an honor to have known her and to have learned from her. and as we mark ruth's passing, we remember how much she contributed to our community. recently her san francisco fountain in front of the hyatt hotel in union square brought her life and work back into the news and we also have the beautiful fountains in japantown, large keep tour on the embarcadaro both based on ruth's work and research and complex paper folding, the mermaid fountain at the square, [speaker not understood] san francisco state and murals in several san francisco schools that were done part of the workshop. a memorial service for ruth will be held on tuesday, august 27th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the band show on the museum concourse at golden gate park across from the de young museum. donations in ruth's honor can be made to the ruth [speaker not understood] fund and sent to 111 6 castro street, san francisco, 94 114.

carranza, distinguished commissioners, board and administrators, parents and community of san francisco, i greet you in spirit of education and i also greet you in the spirit of our young men. we had an opportunity this past spring to engage in an historic event, not just because this was 50 years after the march on washington or 150 years hence the emancipation of proclamation, but we were able to take 14 middle school students and also three high school students, two from this district and one from oakland whose dad literally contacted me and said, please, can you include my young man on this opportunity. i said, absolutely. and what we did was we ventured from here to atlanta, georgia where we were not only able to attend the baccalaureate service at morehouse. very visited the campus. we also toured atlanta. but i think a moment i don't think any one of our young men or chaperones will forget is that we were able to witness our second term president barack obama give the commencement address at morehouse college. and, so, i want to say what not only that meant to these young men, bu

rebecca and the school district we started public information a year ago and my partner richard carranza who is an incredible superintendent, someone i am proud to work with. first of all let me tell you that bullying takes many different shapes. it can be physical, it can be emotional, it can be verbal. i can tell you having been a non english speaking student and immigrant early on and quite frankly times that were very different that we were bullied all the time and didn't know it was bullying and right to the point i actually dropped out of school, and i think it's also important to recognize it's not kids on kids and sometimes adults are part of it, and sometimes unfortunately staff members are part of it. i remember being accused early on by a science teacher and told i was using lsd and i didn't know what it was at the time. i was in the class for three months and didn't work english and the teacher didn't realize i didn't speak english and there was only 20 in the classroom and bullying can take different shapes and not paying attention and caring and while we're focusing on what
