and superintendent carranza, i'm a pediatrician and a father of a kindergartner and second grader at an alternative school korean immersion program and thank you commissioner haney for this very important resolution. gun violence is a real problem for children in the city. i have had patients afraid to play outside and others nearly shot outside. every summer we have patients being treated for gunshot wounds. as a second and third leading cause of death for young people in the united states, we can't ignore that suicide and homicides often involve guns. where are the guns coming from? more than 75% of guns used in suicide attempts were stored in the residence of a victim, relative or friend. i spend my day providing medical care and discussing safety with parents and children and i ask them all about guns in the home. what is clear is that the absence from children's home and communitis is the most reliability and effective measure to prevent gun violence as stated by the american academy of pediatrics and safe storage practices such as keeping guns unloaded and locked and ammunition
