ann is the type of professor that inspires this. half of them were my own notes and so important that i carried them through grad school and used them. they were that well-established in an undergraduate course. that is the kind of scholar and has always been in my head, someone who is very careful, someone who encourages asking questions and really understood the student. i'm also really excited to be here with this book. just over ten years ago, i remember going into ann's office and she at the time was doing a lot of research around trans issues and sports. and we had been talking and i looked up and on the chalkboard, if any of you do research, know often there's a chalkboard with scribbles and she had all this scribbling on it. suddenly this one day it was erased in the middle and in place of all the scribbling, she just wrote two words. queer family. i remember looking at it and she's like byron, this is my work now. i remember thinking at the time okay, after 2005, we were in canada, the marriage thing had happened, i thought okay, is this about like oh, this is what a family looks like. she said no. there's something bigger.
