johnson was wearing a military-style bulletproof vest. he told police he spent time in the military and was carrying a military-style rifle. o deployments to afghanistan. a law enforcement source tells me johnson was hit by gunfire before going into a community college campus building that officers actually followed johnson's blood trail into the building. police found him on the second oor and then fired more rounds through a wall. apparently hitting johnson again and wounding him. after that, the negotiations with him began and after several hours, johnson threatening to charge the officers. johnson indicated initially he only wanted to talk with black police officers, that he didn't want to have anything to do with white people. i'm told he shared police conspiracies and his dislike for police officers. in terms of intensity in this situation on a scale of 1 to 10, this in dallas, scott friedman. >> our team coverage continues in northern virginia now. >> david culver is outside of fairfax where some people are responding to the incident in dallas. david? >> reporter: many of the local officers tell me they didn't sleep

. >> reporter: a law enforcement source tells cbs news micah johnson had hundreds of rounds of ammunition attached to his body when he carried out the attack, an indication hent 13 officers used force against johnson, 11 fired their weapons, and two used a robot to detonate a bomb to kill him. today dallas police chief david brown defended that decision. >> he was telling us how many more he wanted to kill. this wasn't an ethical dilemma for me. i'd do it again. i'd do it again to save our officers' lives. >> reporter: investigators believe johnson appeared to be planning an even larger attack. but saw an opportunity to ambush officers after a protest against police brutality thursday night. a search of his dallas-area home revealed bomb-making me -- material, metal pipes of different length, chemicals and body armor according to a source. the gunman's father james johnson spoke to "the blaze." >> i love my son with all my heart. i hate what he did. >> reporter: his mother, delphine johnson, said the veteran's time in afghanistan changed him. >> the military was not what micah thought it would be. >> it disappointed him. >>

it is behavior very similar to the assault carried out on thursday night. johnson was likely wounded during that shoot out. it appears he left plemessages. they are still trying to decipher and ask how many cops he had shot. >> the evidence response team is processing that extensive crime scene and recreating the sequence of events of every shot fired. it is receiving what is called a credible threat. the parking garage was sealed off after a suspicious person was reported inside the structure which is only supposed to be used by department employees. the search lasted nearly two hours but turned up no one. no one was found inside that garage. back here the memorial continues to grow with messages of love and respect for those killed and wounded on thursday night. we can report that all three of the da.a.r.t. officers have bee released from the suspect. >> hopefully we'll get more in a press conference a lit it later this hour. we plan to bring that live as that happens. thank you, rick. >>> anti-police protests across the country have been anything but peaceful ov

reporter: with solemn goodbyes underway in dallas investigators now believe 25-year-old micah johnson acted alone carryinghursday's deadly police ambush in dallas. shooting a dozen police officers and two civilians ultimately killing five of the officers. >> this was a mobile shooter that had written manifest toes on how to shoot and move, shoot and move. >> reporter: ambush coming at the tail end of a protest over two black men recently shot and killed by police in louisiana and minnesota. police ended up killing johnson using a bomb squad robot. a search of his mother's home where johnson lived outside dallas turned up an arsenal of weapons including bomb making materials, rifles, ammunition and bullet proof vests. meantime tensions and protests continue nationwide, police in tennessee, georgia and missouri are also now investigating incidents of officers being targeted. including in the st. louis area where a 31-year-old black man is accused of shooting an officer during a traffic stop friday. ambushing him as he was walking back to his police car. >> make no mistake, we believed during this investigat
