jason carroll has the the latest on the charges and his night in court.one from outsigh the courthouse. jason, what happened? >> the arraignment took place this evening. another hearing will occur tomorrow at 4:00. the attorney tells me gene palmer's attorney tells me he will be entering a plea of not guilty. he is facing several charges, promoting dangerous contraband, destroying evidence, misconduct. i am told there is a possibility also that he could face an aiding and abetting charge which would have been more serious. however, the district attorney i'm hearing was, did not choose to follow up on those charges because gene palmer had been cooperating with the investigators for a period of time. and so that they did not go after that particular charge. his attorney wanted to make it very clear to me that gene palmer, yes did pass the frozen slab of meat on to richard matt, but he did not know what was inside that slab of meat. he says he xis extremely distraught. he worked at the correctional facility for 28 years, he is 57 years old. at this point he

let's get the latest from cnn national correspondent jason carroll. >> reporter: christine, we are learning a little bit more about joyce mitchell and her alleged role in all this and why she may have initially agreed to be the get-away driver. a source telling cnn that she did have some sort of an inappropriate relationship with both richard matt and david sweat, and that same source telling cnn there may have been some sort of a murder plot to murder mitchell's husband lyle, and perhaps she felt threatened herself at some point and she may have been coerced to being the get-away driver and investigators looking more closely at lyle mitchell to see if he knew anything at all about the escape plan and his attorney telling cnn on tuesday that he knew nothing about the escape plan or the murder plot. we could also tell you, lyle mitchell did visit joyce mitchell when she was in custody out here on tuesday. that visitation lasted for about an hour. there was no physical contact between the two of them. they were separated by a glass partition and spoke over the phone. joyce mitchell, as for he

let's go to jason carroll. jason, what are you learning?to the investigation tells me that joyce mitchell has told investigators she put hacksaw blades inside frozen hamburger meat the meat then passed on to richard matt this happening just about a week before the prison escape. in terms of how that hamburger meat was passed through to richard matt. it was through a guard. it's a violation of prison policy for that meat not to go through a metal detector. his client did not know what was in that frozen chunk much meat. he at this point is under investigation. a little more information coming to us about joyce mitchell we've been hearing so much about her and her husband. she had personally vouched for richard matt and david sweat for several months bringing in baked goods, giving them to guards there at the prison these two inmates were good guys and could be trusted and in fact we're also hearing sources telling us that joyce mitchell went as far as going to prison officials and convincing them and saying it would be a good idea to move da

we'll get to jason carroll near katieville new york. jason?r: actually chris, what we have done since the last time i spoke to you, we have moved further down. now we are on route 374. if you take a look behind me you can see this section here that they have blocked off. we are now in west plattesburg seven miles east of dannemore where the prison is estimated. now we can estimate there's a seven-mile stretch of route 374 now closed only allowing residents in and out. no one else close since last night after there was some sort of suspicious activity going along the area. some sort of suspicious sighting. that's what we are told. that's why we have this section now shut down. as a precaution last night, police are asking people who live along the affected route to stay indoors and leave their outside lights on. also to lock their doors as a precaution. this morning, the local school district has, in fact closed the schools in this particular area. again, as a precaution. yesterday you remember new york's governor asking for the public's help t

cnn's jason carroll has more on that. >> reporter: christine, john investigators calling this one of their most significant leads to date. that evidence found inside that cabin, materials linking these two inmates to dna that they also were able to extract from the materials found inside that cabin. again, a significant lead for investigators, but that's just one of the developments in this story, a story that just seems to have one strange development after another. this one has to do with how these inmates allegedly got some of that contraband inside the prison. we're hearing from a source that perhaps it came through frozen hamburger meat. and i say that again, frozen hamburger meat. and investigators are looking into the possibility that contraband and/or tools were hidden inside frozen hamburger meat delivered to richard matt just a week before his escape. that again, coming to us from a source here on the ground. now, you should also know that these two men collected their contraband over a lengthy period of time but it is believed that one of the guards there at the correction

for the latest on the manhunt and investigation, let's bring in jason carroll. >> reporter: new york police are retracing steps, including right in the neighborhood in front of the prison and knocking on doors again and searching every building and not leaving any stone unturned. they have 500 leads. including one lead that seems to suggest these fugitives may have a plan to go to vermont. >> we have information that suggests that they thought that new york was going to be hot. vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement and that a camp in vermont might be a better place to be than new york. >> reporter: new york's governor says it is important to follow-up on all leads, including the lead involving joyce mitchell. she is the prison employee that was brought in for questioning over the weekend. allegations that she had befriended both of the inmates. i spoke to her daughter-in-law. she said that 95% of what is being put on in the media is simply untrue. paige mitchell said i'm disgusted that anyone would think she could knowingly help them. she would never want a criminal nea

that is where cnn's jason carroll picks up the story. >> reporter: for several hours, a number of laworcement were out here on the ground searching by foot and by air. this after on monday night, they got a tip that two men were spotted walking around during the middle of a storm in the middle of a street when a car approached them, apparently those two men took off. that set off a lot of red flags. that's also what set off this massive search out here. where we are located it's just about 40 miles south of where the prison is located. so you can imagine why this search effort was under way here. again, searching by ground, searching by air in terms of the ground search and the property where we are, it's bordered by train tracks on one side, by a river on the other side. at one point, officers walking shoulder-to-shoulder as they conducted their search throughout the woods. it wasn't just a search the woods, but they also checked security cameras. resident security cameras and security cameras from businesses as well. so far, we are told that has turned up nothing. it's going to be a

jason carroll has our report. >> reporter: tests being run on materials found inside a cabin locatedn a wooded area 20 miles west of the clinton county correctional facility. the dna matches that of escaped cons richard matt and david sweat. state police are still cautious about the findings. >> we have recovered specific items from the cabin and forwarded them to the appropriate laboratories but we are not ready to release the evidence at this time. >> reporter: alerts put out warning residents to be vigilant. and on saturday nearly 300 miles away, word of another possible sighting of fugitives near the town of friendship. >> we conducted a search that has ended. we have declared that area clear. >> reporter: also becoming more clear how the men gathered materials to make their escape. investigators are looking at whether tools or other contraband was hidden inside frozen hamburger meat. that meat did not pass through a metal detector. officials are looking into whether joyce mitchell the prison employee facing charges for her part in the escape may have passed on the frozen meat. g
