on the desk tonight, carter worth, mike khouw and bonawyn joins us carter, what are you looking at? >> right, so to your point, sort of a dull week for energy share, the sector, but of course it's the only one that's had a really good year, right, up some 45%. let's look at a few charts and figure it out together the first is a relative strength line or ratio. it's the performance of energy versus the s&p and what we know of course is that energy, having underperformed badly in 2018, 2019, 20'20 has had a big 2021 d 2022 it's all the hallmarks of a bearish to bullish reversal. and i think there's more to go now let's look at energy it ever is next is a five-year chart. it matches the actual sector from standard and poor's and we are able to break out to new highs. we fell back to trend, and now we're re-approaching the highs and finally, make, again, new highs. and then the here and now chart. this is xle again. and what we know is through a very well-defined minor uptrend in effect since the june-july lull, and we've bounced off that trend line well, repeatedly, and to higmy eye, w

mike and carter, what do we do here? carter, how do the charts look at this point?ell, it is kind of in no man's land, to be fair. if it does drop, as it has dropped to the extent it has, you really buy it just because it has dropped. that is no technique. at the same time, stay short. it has come down a long way. it is important, yet again, on a week over week basis, apple underperformed. it was up 1.2% of the week. that is pretty poor, compared to the s&p up 3.3%. my hunch is to leave apple alone. it is not at a juncture where making a big make a lot of sense. >> mike, what do you think? >> the trade we were taking a look at for apple was a put spread. it has run down to a level where it is trying to take money off the table with that put spread. i would say that the stock's performance this week, given the announcement they made, is pretty poor. you would hope that something like that would propel it to outperformance. it didn't. i wouldn't be a buyer here. despite the fact that it has been tough to bet against this company for a number of years. >> i mean, a lot

carter, what's your take on the action >> i think there's a lot of hope that somehow because we're back to the june low that we'll hold, and yet we know that the s&p is one index, but major indices from the new york stock exchange composite have all understood cut their june lows. i think we go lower. >> yeah. mike, what's your -- we've seen some pretty extraordinary moves across asset classes how do you piece this all together >> i think the real driver here of course is concerns about rates. and if you're thinking about what could happen to equities. you have to think about what's going to happen to rates first now, a lo of people are making a big fuss and say, just over 4%, say two-year rates are high and the fed is stepping on the brakes the fed is not stepping on the brakes from 1998 to 2008 the two-year rate average about 4%, and that was when cpi averaged 6% right now cpi is 8.8%, which means nominal rates remain negative even if you use the pce deflated that's 6.3, that get us to a negative 2% nominal rate if they're going to stop inflation, we are not done yet, and if rates are

carter, what does the chart tell you? >> we will look at capital one. just as a follow-up from last week when we drill down on regional banks and rate sensitive areas of the market. the big news this week was that the two year yields, after showing a bit of life faltered at the end of the week. the low yields, it is not good for financials in principle. we have seen this in the quarterly reports. the loan-loss provisions are taking up. as the operators of these enterprises get ready for the assumptive quality deteriorating in the loans they have, let's look at capital one, which is not a high quality lender. they are lower quality. with a few simple charts. we do know, this was a huge win off of the covid-19 lows. they hit 178 last year. now, they are down 43%, it is exactly 50%. does that mean it holds? no, i don't think it does. the second chart is the same timeframe. it annotates the importance of the level for which it is sold off. you are at the level of the pre- covid-19 selloff and the highs of 2017. there is a reason that it has stopped going do
