carter evans, we're going to you. every day we keep hearing stuff about economy.eople to say something about 2012 that's remotely positive. did anyone say anything like that? >> oh, absolutely not. let's go ahead and look at that. this is a new poll on cnnmoney.com. it asks, how do you think the economy's going to do next year? the overwhelming majority opinion is not so good. 30% think it's going to slip back into a recession. 42% think the economy is going to stall and stagnate. only 22% think it's going to grow fast enough to spur hiring. only 6% think it's going to be a strong bounceback. i do have some good news to end on. take a look at futures today. european leaders are saying they'll have a comprehensive plan to put an end to the debt crisis over there by the end of the month. they also nationalized a bank. that's giving hope on wall street. dow futures up 110. s&p 500 up. >> we'll take it. it is monday. did you hear that new research that came out that said most people's brains are wired to be optimist snick. >> yeah, and i agree with that for the most p

. >>> wall street, coming up, carter evans is live in new york, tracking three important stories, two involve maryland. >>> let's talk about the markets. see the green behind me. it's good news. look at numbers on friday, dow closed up in 2-point 3%. nasdaq sp, 1.4%. i'm looking at or markets in europe, in the green as well, so are futures up 26 points. it's suggesting a stronger open for the day. while the congressional super committee mulls over defense spending cuts, defense contractors aren't waiting to find out what is going to happen and downsizing. last week the electronics systems division said it would trim 800 jobs, most in maryland. that's on top of 500 jobs eliminated in the division this year. these two steps easily represent 100 million out of the economy. it's a small portion of the overall continuing shrinkage of defense spending. 40% of those -- of maryland's private sector job growth is due to those verizon wireless workers going back to work after the strike. maryland's shows it added 10,000 jobs in september. that's according to the u.s. labor bureau data. of that,

for more on what today's report means to investors, let's go live to carter evans in new york city at the nasdaq. good morning, carter. >> hi, tori. yes, you know the focus on the job's report faded just a bit. i think the european debt fears are creeping back into the market right now. but let's talk about that job's report for just a second because it was much better than expected. now, 103,000 jobs, they were added to this economy in the month of september. and now, 103,000, that's a lot more than expected, analysts were thinking that it would be somewhere around 6,000. that's relatively good news. it gets better. the august and the july numbers were also revived upwards, adding 0 out there -- adding about 0 out there. it looks like the numbers went up even higher as well. so now it looks like the economic picture, at least for the jobs who might not be quite as bad as, you know, that some have thought. however, i do want to put it into context for you, that 103 jobs is a very weak number compared to a healthy economy for you. now, we need to be adding 135,000 jobs for them every s

for more, let's go live to carter evans at the nasdaq site. good morning.led to the big jump at the opening bell here? >> well, it's off --well, it's positive that a lot of people are concerned about the debt crisis and whether or not the leaders can come one a solution. dexia approved a resolution and european leaders are also pledging to recap talize banks if necessary and they say they are going to present a comprehensive plan to contain the -- contain the debt crisis. you can see stocks are well above 200 points. you know, we were approaching 300 points of an increase for the dow a little while el yell. so some significant news today. but again -- and i want to caution this, the markets are still so, so volatile white now. a lot of this is people acting on emotion. they weren't feeling so bad about -- so good about europe on friday. a lot of things can change in the day. we still have three more weeks to go until we find out what this new plan to contain the debt crisis is there -- is. >> thank you, carter. >>> how a new law is going to affect people wh

for more on that, we go to carter evans at the nasdaq in new york city. carter we were expecting find of a bit of some profit-taking going on this morning. but how are things going so far? >> reporter: well well, you know things are -- well, you know, things are coming back around. you can see the dow right off the opening bell, it down -- it went down a little bit. now we're moving back into positive territory. the dow is up 11 points. nasdaq and s&p 500 just barely in negative territory. we got this personal spending and personal income report today. in september, on average, our personal spending was up 6/10ths of 1%. you know, this is good because consumer spending represents about two-thirds of the economic activity in the country. so economically speaking, it's good we're spending more money and it's one reason we got the good report that we got yesterday. this report shows our economy is glowing again in this nation at a pace of 2.5% in the third quarter. now, 2.5% is still subpar for a normal economy. but i gotta tell you it's so much better than t
