carter evans is at the scene and joins us now by phone. carter, what do you know? the scene around 12:30 this afternoon, it was in the middle of an intense gunfight between the person in that cabin believed to be christopher dorner and sheriff's deputies since then, two deputies have been hit by that gunfire, one has passed away. in the meantime, swat teams moved in on this cabin and over a period of a couple of hours they shot canisters of tear gas inside the cabin. shortly after those last round of tear gas were fired that cabin erupted into flames, it is still unclear at this point if the tear gas canisters caused the fire or if that fire was started from within. it looks impossible that anyone could have survived this inferno, there has been a lot of ammunition blowing up and it has taken a while before firefighters have been able to move in, but they are now beginning to get water on this fire and it will be some time before police can identify anyone who may have been inside. scott. >> pelley: and police are telling us there is no indication that christopher

we now have carter evans live on the phone. carter, what is the latest? >> reporter: scott, i can tell you that the swat team has the cabin where christopher dorner is located right now, they have it surrounded. they've been moving into position for the last hour or so. we haven't heard a volley of gun fire like you heard there in the last hour or so. what we have heard are police officers firing tear gas into that building. they've also been laying down suppressive fire to keep dorner from firing back at them while they've been moving officers into position. there are two police helicopters circling overhead now, keeping an eye on things from the sky. on the ground, things seem to have calmed down a bit as authorities seem to have moved into place. one thing is for sure-- we know christopher dorner is still inside that cabin, and that time is on police officers' side when it comes to this standoff. scott? >> pelley: carter, is there any reason to believe that there's anyone else in the cabin with dorner? are there any hostages? >> reporter: there's nothi

the phone reports of carter evans less than an hour ago. the latest information is that that dorner is pinned down in the cabin. the location of the cabin is officially in a town called mentown, california, in the big bear lake region. the two wounded law enforcement officers are to be medivaced. area roads have been closed. four schools were on lockdown, but that lockdown was lifted moments ago. dorner has been pinned down for the better part of an hour and law enforcement in this remote area called for substantial backup with a so-called, bunker s.w.a.t. team seen approaching the area a few moments ago. we are in a pause now with dorner pinned down and with police seemingly waiting for more force before moving on the cabin or perhaps simply waiting him out. dorner is reportedly heavily armed and any move in his direction is dangerous. if the cnn, l.a. times report of hostages is correct, law enforcement options become limited. dorner, fires to police and police fire into that cabin if hostages are there. this could be over any second now

when the manhunt came to a sudden, violent end, correspondent carter evans was there. >> reporter: we were on the side of road when we decided to follow this unmarked police truck less than a mile away, we came to a dead stop right in the middle of a firefight. >> i see a lot of these authorities moving to take cover themselves. ( gunfire ) the man believed to be christopher dorner was cornered in this cabin. he was shooting at police with a high-powered sniper rifle. >> guys down! >> reporter: police scanner made it clear-- two sheriff's deputies had been shot. >> officer down, officer down! >> reporter: deputies couldn't get to the wounded because the gunfire was so intense. they used smoke grenades to cover their rescue of the deputies. they were med ed evakd out but only one survived. we witnessed at least half a dozen heavy exchanges of fire. police say the suspect had a sound suppresser on his rifle so they had difficulty figuring out where to direct their fire. christopher dorner is holed up in a cabin about 100 yards behind our position right now. you can see authorities and t

carter evans tells us the sheriff is standing by his deposit. >> reporter: authorities are now releasing more details about christopher dorner's final hours. we were caught in the cross-fire, a gun battle that lasted nearly an hour. then silence. swat team leader greg herbert: >> there was no response from the suspect, none, no movement. and we felt that, based upon his behavior, that he was laying in wait for us. >> reporter: with daylight fading herbert's team deployed a powerful form of tear gas known as a burner. the cabin caught fire and as the flames grew larger. >> we heard a distinct single gunshot come from inside the house. >> the information we have right now seems to indicate that the wound that took christopher dorner's life was self-inflicted. >> reporter: captain kevin lacey made it official-- dorner killed himself. less clear is whether the fire was deliberately set. you indicated on wednesday that you did not intentionally burn that cabin down to get mr. dorner out. audio we recorded there suggests differently. >> i stand by that remark. >> burn that ( bleep ) house down

carter evans has the latest on this investigation. >> reporter: the final hours of the manhunt for christopher dorner began when jim and karen reynolds opened the door of one of their rental condos. >> we had come into the living room and he opened the door and came out at us. >> to see that big gun stick up there. >> yeah. he had his gun drawn the whole time. >> he had the gun drawn. >> reporter: a man believed to be dorner tied them up. >> he talked to us, trying to calm us down, and saying very frequently he would not kill us. >> reporter: he then took their car. >> we listened for probably a minute or two to make sure he was gone. it sounded quiet. so then we started struggling trying to get loose. ( gunfire ). >> reporter: they called 911 triggering a chain of events that ended with tuesday's shoot-out in which two sheriffs deputies were shot. 35-year-old jeremiah mackay died from his wounds. the firefight we witnessed was intense. we were forced to take cover but we left our cell phone on. early in the standoff, you could hear officers suggesting burning the suspect out. >> get going rig
