carter evans is in flagstaff, arizona. carter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.he snow began falling around 11:00 last night. there's probably a foot on the ground so far. it won't stop until tomorrow afternoon. by the time it's all said and done, there could be more than two feet on the ground here. that's on top of the 16 inches that's already on the ground. now, they do get a fair amount of snow here in flagstaff, but to put it all into perspective for you, the town of payson typically gets about two feet per season. this storm will drop between two and three feet in the next 48 hours. that's snow on the las vegas strip. it's the second time in a week for an area that hasn't seen a measurable amount in a decade. it's been unusually snowy in the west. these satellite images of the mountains in california show how much more snow cover there is this month compared to the same time last year. now, as the storm heads east this weekend, it's expected to bring up to a foot of snow to parts of the midwest. kansas, wisconsin, iowa, they could see a lot of snow. and her

carter evans is in flagstaff with how people are coping with the historic storm. er, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, it's historic, all right. this is record snowfall. big time. look at how high it's filing imhere and it's still snowing. and they've already declared a state of emergency here in prescott and also in flagstaff. people across flagstaff shoveled furiously to try and keep up with the storm, but with the snow falling at up to two inches an hour, that was no easy task. there was so much snow we saw some people skiing down the middle of the street. but it's not all fun and games. even with 35 plows and help from the arizona department of transportation, the county had trouble clearing the 750 miles of roadway. across arizona roads and parts of major interstates have forced to shut down. some drivers got stuck, including hew reolds. >> at 100 feet in is when i knew there was problems. cars lined up. we were stuck there for 4 1/2 hours. >> reporter: in payson, the biggest storm in two decades dumped at least 17 inches. the town usually gets just und

carter evans is in yorba linda. >> reporter: good morning. this is all blocked off. preserved for ntsb investigators. the plane actually crashed into a home down the street but it apparently started breaking up while it was still in the air. there's debris everywhere. did some serious damage to this home here. witnesses say it felt like an earthquake when the plane hit the ground. flames erupted from this two story family home in yorba linda sunday afternoon after part of the plane and one of its engines slammed into it. >> i heard a huge explosion. >> reporter: the plane's body was found in a backyard of another nearby home. plane parts rained down across the neighborhood. this video shows a man using a garden hose to put out a fire on a wing. >> my friend's house down the street, parts of the engine flew into their house in the room he was just in. >> reporter: according to the ntsb, the twin engine cessna 414 took off from fuller ton municipal around. it climbed to about 7,800 feet. about ten miles into the flight, the plane began a rapid descent into the neighbor

carter evans has the latest. good morning. believe snowmegeddon may be one of the terms they've used for this one. >> reporter: good morning, this is an unusual sight in seattle. we are at the world-famous pike street market. you see three to four inches on the ground with another two to six inches in the forecast by the time this is done. governor jay inslee has declared a state of emergency. one county official called this storm a once in a decade or two event. about six inches of snow fell at sea-tac airport. a snowball fight between workers on the tarmac. an unusual sight there. at least 200 flights were cancelled to accommodate the winter weather. people cleared store shelves as they rushed to prepare. one person described fights breaking out at crowded checkout lines. as the storm moved in, it obscured the famous space needle in the queen anne neighborhood. a bus had to bail a route after getting stuck on a snow-covered street. overnight some roads were closed altogether. now more flight cancelations are expected today.
