carter evans leads us off tonight at the getty fire near los angeles. >> reporter: southern californiansoke up to powerful winds and towering flames up to 60 feet high in a fire season that's been relentless. >> crazy, absolutely crazy. >> reporter: this man was driving on interstate 405, one of the nation's busiest freeways. in the surrounding hills, some of l.a.'s most exclusive neighborhoods. fire crews had to navigate narrow canyon roads amid a blizzard of ash. the goal right now for these firefighters for the most part is going to be to keep these flames from spreading to other homes, and to get residents out. >> we have a fire. it's fast moving. it's time to move. >> reporter: among those who had just minutes to flee, lebron james, who tweeted, "these l.a. fires are no joke. had to emergency evacuate my house," and arnold schwarzenegger who called firefighters "true action heroes." 1,100 firefighters were able to save all but a handful of homes. california's worst fire remains to the north, where the so- called kincade fire has now devoured an area twice the size of san francisco.

carter evans is in moore park, california. what do you see there? >> reporter: well, good morning. fire retardant that you see here is really a big line of defense for these homes. here are still more than 1,000 firefighters working this fire, and these high winds, they're expected to continue until this evening. flames raged into the night fueled by wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. this fire in simi valley ignited before down wednesday coming within feet of the reagan library which houses memorabilia including air force one. this fire is raging right now. you can see the vortex of flames and smoke and wind blowing our direction. imagine what it's like for firefighters to approach flames like that. the fire quickly consumed this barn where volunteers helped rescue animals trapped inside. one horse even seemed to turn back to lead other horses to safety. despite an all-out assault, flames still managed to jump a freeway forcing a nearby neighborhood to evacuate. >> we put everything in the car. i'm glad we did. by the time it jumped the 23 freeway, we only had second to get out.

carter evans is in los angeles with more on this story. so carter, what prompted this action?new laws come after one southern california school witnessed two acts of violence, and one of them leaving a 13-year-old boy dead. and concerns a 10-year-old student at another school might have died over suicide over being bullied. the question now -- do the new laws go far enough? a student sucker punched in this video last month. diego stoltz died of his injuries a week later. on monday, another attack at the same school. >> these girls had time to punch my daughter in the face nine times. >> reporter: now police are investigating whether 10-year-old allison wendel who attended this southern california elementary school died by suicide last weekend. police have been scouring her social media and following leads at her school that she might have been bullied. >> we want people to remember her like who she was, not think that she was a sad little girl that was in some, you know, horrible depression because it wasn't the truth. >> reporter: rise up against bullying is a school violence

it's not clear what started the fire, carter evans is near the scene. firefighters are beginning to attack this rights now. it started around 2:00 a.m. near the 405 freeway. about 3300 homes in the areas evacuated and most people only had minutes to flea. pl imagine what it was like early in the morning with police coming through yelling to evacuate right away. right now we have at least 500 firefighters on the scene and back out here if we get closer you see they're trying to make entry into this home right now and they're beginning to go inside. but when you look at the flames coming out of the roof here, it looks like a dangerous situation and it looks like it could potential i will be a total loss. the goal right now for these firefighghters for the most par will be to keep these flames from spreading to other homes. back to you. >> in northern california, conditions could help crews gain ground on fires that have forced people to evacuate. over night two small earthquakes hit the area. the kincade fire has been spreading in the wine region. statewi

carter evans is in santa clarita. the house right behind you is burning as we speak. >> reporter: this home right now is fully involved. take a look. you can see the fire in the window upstairs. firefighters making entry right now. now this fire had calmed down this evening. the wind had calmed down, and then all of a sudden right around 1:30, 2:00 a.m., the winds picked back up. the fire exploded again, and this is what you get. now here's the main problem. you see all these flying embers in the air? the concern, these embers could land on another home and catch it on fire. and in fact, that's what's happened down the street. we also have another home where firefighters are making entry. the goal now -- to try and keep more homes from catching fire. everybody in this community had to evacuate overnight. the fire-fight in the canyons north of los angeles continued into the night as structures burned forcing evacuations. >> dozens and dozens of families on this block here. >> reporter: the fire started just before 3:00
