carter center in atlanta, a focal point of our lives now. we have been pretty much on an equal basis. >> how does the museum fit in with the library and with theresident carter: the museum tells a good picture. it makes a good picture of what we did in the white house, but we did before the white house. it does not cover the time of our lives after i was president. that is basically part of the carter center which is next door to the library and museum. it's an extensive picture of our lives up through and including the white house time. >> there are a number of things i want to ask about. as a notation from your mother that says on your baby book that it is jimmy now but later will become jim. that never happened, did it? president carter: i was always jimmy. my father's name was james earl. i am james earl junior. everybody called him earl and they called me jimmy. when i ran for president i had quite a hard time with some secretaries of state who refused to use my nickname on the official documents. i had to go to court in two states to get jimmy on the ballot and of james or carter junior. -- earl carter junior. i signed official laws and

importantly for the carters, though, will be the presence of the employees of the carter center and the presidential library and museumthey'll have a chance to pay their respects. this is a testament to the respect for the man who defined what it meant to remain in service of others after leaving the most powerful office in the world. jeff zeleny is here with me. jeff, a symbolic journey for the late president today, mirroring his life from humble beginnings in southern georgia, here to the capitol, here in atlanta. >> victor, it's extraordinary, that improbable journey from a peanut farmer to the presidency. but it would not have happened, of course, without georgia and atlanta, where he served, as you said, as a state senator and as a governor. and it was his work as a governor also ahead of his time at that moment that led him to the presidency. and his life will be celebrated, i think, quite appropriately, through the chapters in which he lived. we will see him going obviously, from planes to his small town here to atlanta, where he began his rise. but i do think the carter center behind us here represents his lar

now to jeff zeleny at the carter presidential center, the site of carter's nonprofit organization, his presidential library and museumjeff, what will take place there later today when the motorcade arrives? and our people are already lining up to be able to get a glimpse. >> well, fredricka, as the motorcade makes its way here to atlanta, it will at first stop by the atlanta state capitol. of course, that's where jimmy carter first served elective office at the state level. as a state senator. he ran for governor the first time. he lost, and then he won. and he served one term as governor. and then, of course, that vaulted him to the presidency. so it will his motorcade will pass the capitol here in atlanta before making its way to the carter center. but this is the site really where the former president did much of his life's work, really, over nearly four decades, more than four decades, actually, through democracy and humanitarian efforts. so there will be a service inside a private service inside the carter center, and then his body will lie in repose for a couple of days here in georgia. and that is where people

you're seeing the motorcade, specifically the hearse arriving here at the carter center in atlanta, which is a living museum. and library that focuses on his work not only during his term as president, but before and since his time in office. i have with me cnn's jeff zeleny. we are awaiting the arrival of the hearse at the circle of flags in front of the carter center. there is an honor guard awaiting there. here's that live picture. we will stop and listen once the hearse arrives. but there is a ceremony that was actually designed by the carters starting almost 40 years ago. jeff, of what will happen and every choice is intentional. >> it is intentional. this is a family private ceremony. but in addition to the family, also employees of the carter center, because that is an extension of obviously, jimmy and rosalynn carter. but we're told that one longtime friend of the family's, bernstein hollis, whose family has known the carters for a century, she's one of the first employees of the carter center. she'll be giving a prayer here. but beyond that, there will not be speeches by dignitaries. chip carter, the late presi

carter's family held a private service in the lobby of his presidential library and museum. >> all ofhave been thinking about this day and planning for it for a long time, but it is obviously still hard for all of us. for us, my family, and i'm sure i can see on your faces for many of you, i appreciate that, but just know that while we mourn my grandfather's passing, i know in my heart and you all do that his legacy will live on. >> president carter will now lie in repose at the carter center and starting in the next hour the public will be allowed to pay their respects until his departure for washington, d.c. on tuesday. then carter will lie in state at the u.s. capitol before all five living presidents gather to commemorate him at his state funeral on thursday at the washington national cathedral. joining me now, nbc correspondent priya schrader outside the carter center in atlanta. have mourners begun to line up at the center to pay their respects? >> reporter: jonathan, they have. we see a few dozen mourners who are in line waiting to pay their respects and the progressional start

carter definitely made it even more so. >> and that center, his library, the museum, it really is a living museum. and it is represented so much. i mean, the intricacies of his approach on life, his presidency, his work in public service. how do you see that that might continue? it really is still one of the most visited sites in atlanta, the carter center. how do you see that proceeding? >> well, there are two things. there's a library, and then there's a center, and the center is doing all this work internationally, and that will continue working in partnership with emory university and some other things. and he made sure that there was a succession for the carter center and the library. um, you know, he was the only president elected from georgia. and i mean, really from the deep south. and the through improbable circumstances and odds, i don't think i mean, i kind of laughed when he said he was going to run for president. you know, no one really took him seriously. but there was a wave. and after watergate, his stance on ethics and in government and in a his selflessness again, uh, you know, i

museum and presidential library. that is a national park service site. it is not unusual. what's amazing about carter'sion to go home is he is not being buried at the presidential library. he's being buried at his home with rosalynn. that's a more unusual choice. host: the home built in 1961. you heard his grandson talk about it. modest home, ranch style, pictures all over the refrigerator. what did you make of the description his grandson had of his grandpa? guest: it's not what we typically associate with presidential homes. not that all presidents have been wealthy but usually once they leave office, they write books, give talks, and up living in slightly different circumstances then when they came into office. the commitment signifies a commitment to the community, the church community, the people, neighbors he grew up with an recognition of how much his presence could continue to do for georgia. he didn't have to go back and he chose to. it's less about the house and more about the roots and wanting to make sure as long as he was able to, he gave back to that space. host: when he left office, he d

right next to the museum and the presidential library and that is the national park service site as well. so it is not unusual for that to happen. what i think is amazing that carter'sat is slightly more unusual choice, the home built in 1961 and you heard his grandson talk about a very modest home, ranch-style, pictures all over the refrigerator. what did you make of the description his grandson had of his grandpa? >> guest: it's not what we typically associate with presidential homes, to be sure. not that all presidents have been wealthy but usually once they leave office they do write books, they give talks, the in-depth living in slightly different circumstances than perhaps when they came in office. the commitment to meet with what it signifies is a commitment to the community and to the church community and the people in the neighbor secret up with andy recognition of how much his presence could continue to do for georgia. he didn't have to go back there. he chose to. for me it's less about the house and more about the roots and wanted to make sure as long as he is able to, he gave back to that space. >> host: he discovered his family farm was in debt. he was
