and so carter, and i have a chapter on the welfare reform. welfare was incredibly unpopular as a program across the country. carter understood that and wanted to reform it. this is something the bill clinton does in 1994. he was lauded for it. carter wanted to perform welfare, then -- democrats controlled congress. does not even get out of committee. it is partially part of his inability to deal with congress, but it also shows the of the democratic party fundamentally divided. it was in the democratic party's interest to reform welfare, support is on president. jimmy carter's bill that he introduced on national television was one of the major hallmarks of the '76 campaign, it never even saw -- it never even got about. it is a revelation that liberals did not have the ability to reform themselves. the low point when reagan comes into office. liberals just cannot begin to understand how a country of roosevelt and kennedy could have elected ronald reagan. on one hand it reinforces, reemphasize is their alienation from their own country in belie

brianne carter is live on the scene on the phone. what do we know. >> we have now learned that this fire has claimed the lives of two individuals here in this mobile home. at this point, we're still being kept back far from the scene so we're not able to see the home at this point. the identities of those individuals has not been released at this point either. fire investigators and a number of fairs and first responder risk main out here on the scene. now, as close as we were able to get, it does appear the fire is out at this paterno. investigators now combing through that mobile home looking through it to make sure they have not gotten any hot spots in terms of the fire. at this point, the cause of the fire that started all this under investigation. all of this happening next door to the entrance to quantico and the road is shutdown. we continue to monitor this. again two people now dead as a result of this early-morning fire in a mobile home. their identities have in the been released. we will have more in a half hour. >> okay, b

jimmy carter is coming in now, look, who doesn't laud and admire jimmy carter? is the greatest ex-president in american history. jimmy carter came into office i would argue, wholly unprepared, one term governor of georgia for the extraordinary burden to the presidency, but probably more important is the civil war that's going on in the democratic party. jimmy carter you can argue the senior democrat, meaning that bill clinton sort of democrat before there was an additional structure. it goes to show that one person cannot change a party. you need institutions. you need to have allies. the democratic party was that war the late 1970s. it was the old-style true believers who would claim of the selections because we are not liberal enough versus jimmy carter and the scattering of maybe hubert humphrey, who passed away during the carter president d., who understood somehow the democratic party has lost its finger on the pole for the american people. so i have a chapter on carter's welfare reform. welfare was incredibly unpopular program. carter understood that. he w

jimmy carter has written a lot of books. >> jimmy carter has written 23 books which is more than any other ex president or president in their lifetimes. theeder roosevelt wrote a lot but most before he became president. jimmy carter's book library has developed since he became president. he mentions his growing up in georgia and has been very successful with his book sales. and it's part of his kind of shaping himself as people always call him the best ex president. i'm not sure i agree with the conceptualization. but it is part of his resurgence in his post presidential years that he has become this contemplative author. >> what kind of author do you think he is? >> it's very autbige graphical. home spun stuff. i've heard he has a lot of church-going ladies in the south seem to like it and they buy a lot of his books. so he has this built-in audience that worked well for him. >> what do you think of the story that has run for years that teddy roosevelt read a book a day or more? and is that really possible? >> yes. sometimes two or three. i know it's possible because when i was in g
