my one and only rule of cartooning is to try to make a cartoon insightful. if i can't make it insightful, i try to make it funny. if i can't make it -- if i can't make it insightful or funny, make it timely. needless to say, i draw a lot of timely cartoon. this one was very timely a couple of months ago when i first true it. now, you might think i am tough on myself. but hell, being tough on myself might be all i have going for me. i've always had a terrible if or debt inferiority complex when it comes to my work. i realize that there are 11 cartoonist -- a lot of cartoonist working today that are better artist and those are funnier and more intelligent than me. so suffering as i do from such low cartooning self-esteem, i've always tried to compensate for my inadequacies by a work ethic that borders on obsession. now, in light of that, i would accept this honor tonight, but not as a recognition of artistic talent nor as a testament to any inherent wit or wisdom. i will accept this award on behalf of of neurotic insecurity and as the hard work it inspires. in

they published a scholarly book about the whole danish cartoon affair and did not put any of the cartoons in their. -- in there. my reaction was disbelief because one is not talking about taste anymore. this is what the book was about. and while perhaps you did not have to publish everyone one of them, it is hard to communicate what was going on if you do not do it. i have a letter in the "new york times" complaining about the fact they did not publish any of the cartoons at issue with respect to what we're talking about today. their stated position was they have a policy against publishing materials which by their nature are offensive and do not advance public discussion of some issues. my view was that they were newsworthy. how could they not be? and while one could make a determination in the service of good taste, if you will, not to publish them all, publishing none of them seem to me to deprive the readers of the chance to make a more informed judgment or at least have a better informed body of knowledge as to what was going on. maybe it was the head of cnn who put it most candidly.

but you will note that even here, there are some remains of uniform, cartoon, slacks, and banners. no doubt it'll saw hard to get the identity of this unrecognizable portrait. those embellishments must have been deeply ingrained in the public consciousness. meanwhile, our friend john norman continued to reduce his engravings, spreading his enthusiasm for washington. this print of the commander in chief paired with an accompanying image of martha washington was published in 1782. the engraving underneath, citing the source, -- that would've been the portrait painted by charles was in peale. norman is sticking with his peale inspired face. unfortunately perhaps for his reputation, norman didn't stop there. in 1783, the continental congress had voted unanimously that "an equestrian statue of general washington be erected at the place where there residents should be established." he was to be dependent not only on horseback but in roman dress wearing and laurel wreath. norman, who struggled to depict cannons and banners, must've considered horses and roman costumes beyond his skill set
