makes you know progressive accomplishments actually happen yeah and that inside outside strategy carver progressive democrats of america talks about a lot of what this group is all about can you tell us for people who aren't familiar with the phrase what does that mean well it means you're working with you know are groups that work on various causes in issues and they're often the experts on those issues and working with them while i'm an elected official and i can introduce bills in amendments and write letters they can help on the outside organizing the grassroots to then help get that message out to other members of congress so right now i'm working with groups a lot of the labor unions and others working on trade issues there are some really terrible trade deals and fast track things that could be coming up in the very near future but by me being here on the inside sitting at the table where decisions are made working with the groups on the outside that can really get the grassroots motivated in doing things we can have a much more effective and stronger net strategy. and and so bac

my grandfather, like many others who came to vermont from italy, was a granite carver. he opened a granite business in southern vermont. and the hard work and determination of my maternal grandparents who did not speak english when they arrived and settled in this country to lay the foundation for my mother and our family. my paternal great grandparents came from ireland and my grandfather who was named patrick leahy, and i'm named after him, worked in a stone quarry as well. they worked hard. they had a family. i grew up the son of printers in montpelier, our state capital. but nearly every american family has a story like mine and marcelle's. we are more alike than we are different from today's immigrants and first generation americans. the majority of new immigrants will continue this proud tradition of hard work, the drive toward prosperity and embracing the values that make america great. and they will someday tell their children and grandchildren of their own immigrant histories. as marcelle and i learned from our parents and our grandparents. and the bill we cons
