he was a carver of marble, monument and tombstone shop in the very center part of downtown asheville. his mother, third-generation mountain girl born in 1860, and she was an enterprising young woman for her day, a businesswoman. they purchased the house in 1906, already a boarding house. she is aspiring to go into the boarding house business. the previous owner of the house had family from kentucky, and the boarding house was called old kentucky home and you will see that we still hang the old kentucky home sign on the porch today. it was a well-established boardinghouse. there may have been up to some 19 boarders living in the house when she purchased it. she's going to charge them one dollar a day to stay here and that's going to come with a breakfast and supper as well. her husband helped her to go into the business. she is going to move into this house in august 1906 to operate the boardinghouse. when thomas was not quite six when his mother moved into this house, and he's the baby of the family and she will insist that the baby of the family come to the house with her. he very mu
