they didn't want to be called carville anymore. they wanted to be called oceanside, which sounded a lot more romantic. and so here we looked at that picture. there's a couple of car houses still around in the early 1910. but just 15 years later it really starts filling in. the stucco homes we think about in the sunset district. the merchant builders start building. the row houses start taking over in the 1920's and 1930's. and soon people start forgetting that carville was even there. the cars that do remain are kind of derelict. they've been in the elements for 20 years. they're really warn down. mostly they're rented to people who were too poor to rent to other places. so instead of these judges and lawyers and doctors renting cars you had people really on the fringes of society using them, which doesn't help the whole reputation of carville or these cars with the neighbors. they're getting beat up. this is by 1925. a lot of cars, they get pushed back in the backyards of house of lots. so somebody might build a conventional house

that's where carville takes off. so who's responsible for carville?the west side of the city. robert fitzgerald was called the king of carville. he was an early settler to carville. jacob heyman that realtor, started being called the father of carville. we'll see why in a second. and this guy on the left, colonel daley, was often called the pioneer father of carville. he really gets a lot of the credit. here's colonel daley in his little shed. how do we describe him? he's sort of a 1890's bohemian, a bit of a herm yit. most importantly, he was a friend of adolph sutro's. and sutro had a real estate shack on the northwest corner of the sunset. he let colonel daley squat in there essentially. he went out every morning, walked along the beach. whatever washed up he brought back to his shed and created quite a large little compound of old bottles, shoes, anything that washed up. a ship wreck. provided a bunch of lumber. he made a sleeping loft in his cabin. for a while he had a wife. she didn't wash up in the waves. but she did eventually wash out. she co

chris: carville said the democrats would benefit down the road. not the president. this could take years when people say, why don't we have a health care plan? i guess the question is will the president be pained as the guy that he went too far with power which the tea party will rebel against. or will we still have a problem of 50 million people uninsured. >> the republican have a great opening, look this was his center piece legislation. it was unconstitutional. chris: is that fair? >> they're reviewing an active congress, not the president. the commerce law is about the congress' authority. that's what the supreme court's looking at. it's the power of congress that's what we have to remember. the second thing is even if the supreme court strikes down only the second part, they will take out the mandate and that insurance companies can't turn down something with pre-existing conditions. so there is something that everyone will like. chris: what's the strongest argument going into november. that the supreme court, they went too far. they're all appointed by regan,

carville, is mitt romney wrong when he says that? >> well, look, first of all, to be fair to the president when he took office, they were losing three quarters of the million jobs a month. but, look, i'm not a big believer that this economy is very good. i think when the president goes out and says things it's getting better out there, i don't think people like to hear that. so i don't think these numbers are very good, i didn't think the numbers month were very good either. i think the president needs to talk more about the midled class, talk about how he's not satisfied with the pace and why he has a jobs bill that's sitting there and languishing in congress and things like that. i didn't think 120,000 was a good number or 220,000 was a good number. >> gee, you're the guy who calls himself on the airwaves as a professional democrat. if you can't butt a positive spin on it, how on earth can the campaign can put a positive spin on it? >> i don't know that the campaign can put a positive spin on it. >> really? >> no. when -- look, whe

our "strategy session," our political contributor james carville along with strategist alice stewart.t of the republican leadership are coalescing around mitt romney, but rick santorum still has not publicly, formally endorsed mitt romney. why? >> well, they spoke last week prior to rick suspending the campaign and he's going do exactly what he's been saying all along that he'll do. once the nominee is announced he'll do everything he can to coalesce conservatives and unite behind that person and that's exactly what he'll do with governor romney. they had a short conversation last week and they agreed to talk later and they'll work out the best way to move forward and what we need more than anything else is to coalesce conservatives and the fiscal and social conservatives together for the romney campaign and do job number one which is to defeat barack obama and the romney campaign is moving full speed ahead and along the great start with that in days and weeks to come, but they will all work together and as i said, defeat barack obama. >> i'm sure, james, rick santorum will have some

i think that's what james carville is doing, spinning it so fast. i think that's not going to outweigh the message that the president's signature legislation, his legacy legislation, the one he has hung his hat on, has been deemed by the supreme court of the united states to be so far outside the purview of american governmental power that it is unconstitutional. i think that will weigh much more heavily. >> okay. let's move on and talk some republican politics. romney predicting a win tuesday in wisconsin. he is lapping the field in the delegate count, picking up endorsements. if you watch any of the major news networks and you see the people from the republicans, conservatives, all saying it's time. most of them are saying, it's time to get behind romney. the question is, gingrich, santorum, does it look like they're becoming a sideshow? who wants to go first? raise your hand. go ahead, will. >> they've been a sideshow. >> go ahead, will. >> there it is, elsie's got it. he's nailed it, they have been a sideshow for quite a while now. this thing ma
