casey wian is in chicago. casey, what's the latest?g, as they have been for some ten months now. those negotiations intensified over the weekend. despite the fact that they were not able to reach an agreement, they called a strike, those negotiations have continued and i suppose that is the good news, that the two sides are still talking. two main issues, though, remain on the table. first of those is this new plan on how to evaluate teachers. and the teachers union says that they do not want teachers to be evaluated largely based on standardized test scores. they say that's unfair to teachers in poorer areas where test scores are lower. also, they are very concerned about mayor rahm emanuel's plan to -- to allow principals to -- to allow principals, excuse me, to control which teachers are hired after teachers are laid off. that is something that the teachers union says is unfair, and they want to keep control of that process. parents, though, are very concerned about what is happening to their children while this strike is ongoing. l
