casey. withor casey:, start secretary osborne. as we all know, with all summers whoase, it doesn't matter you are or what your background is. it affects every community, in some way or another, most every family. you know in our state we had a major part of our population that is considered rural. we have 48 of our 67 counties considered rural in pennsylvania. we have to make sure no matter where a person lives, they have access to the treatment and support that they need. what can we do to make sure individuals diagnosed with alzheimer's disease who happen oneive in rural areas, say of those 48 countries in our state, that they have access to services and support? secretary osborne: thank you senator. that isn't question we ask hours -- is a question we ask ourselves every day. those living in rural areas with alzheimer's disease already face challenges, including a lack of transportation or limited access to health care without having to travel a great distance. those challenges create more stress on caregivers. for us, to help these rural communities, it is not just an aging issue. it has been pointed out to me time and time again, this is a community issue. how are we going to best leverage our resources with the department of aging, the department of health and human resources to the local level to make sure we are working with every local community, plus the hospital system, and i can go on and on about the need to pivot resources back to caregivers and communities that are established. one of the easiest things we can do is to work with our partners on creating these dementia friendly communities. where any of us live, work, worship, play, each one of us has a stake in this in terms of ensuring individuals with dementia are understood, that they are valued, and that they are still able to contribute to their community. by working together with our partners, we can ensure that our communities are dementia friendly, and we can look up for one another, and we can ensure that the most important story is the individual living with them a check. -- living with dementia. early diagnosis and early connecting to services. if we can better diagnose and better connect individuals with low quali -- with low-cost high-quality services, we can costthat -- can bend that curve. , how we particular lens connect to the national plan. communities across the country, regardless of zip code, so we have dementia friendly communities to help people through this devastating disease. senator casey: i know you have been to every one of those communities, who have substantial health care needs, at least the potential for an access problem. you mentioned at the outset of your answer about the stress on caregivers. i wanted to focus on that for a moment. we have to make sure we're doing everything we can to support the. -- to support them. can you tell the committee what support to the caregivers need and what services are most valuable to the? different thanno when you journey home on the weekends, inevitably somebody questions you, i need help with x y and z. i had two friends that pushed me with what you described. i need help affording care. my siblings won't help me. for us in pennsylvania, how will we invest in short that for -- we best ensure that for individuals with this disease, we can connect them with local resources? they support community centers and safe harbors for those with dementia, perceive access to nutritional services in a safe harbor in community. we have an
