. >> for more on the story, i'm joined by casey jordan she's a criminologist and behavorial analyst.t's hard to imagine, it's a scenario here where you have a ransom note. what does this tell you about the suspect in this case that he managed to find the home, that he put this note into, according to police, into the mailbox at the home, with the child in his van. >> and make no mistake, sara, without that ransom note, i don't know that we would have charlotte right now. so, this is highly unusual, because the house where she was being -- the camper where she was being held, where mr. ross lives is just three minutes from charlotte's family home. and that is a good 20 minutes from the campground where she was abducted. so it is not what we initially thought that it might have been somebody at the campground. a ransom camper who sees a random child and impulsively snatches her up. the fact that he lives near the family home does say that he had eyes on charlotte and probably followed them to the campground with the idea of abducting charlotte because he knows where the family lives. m

also with us is frank figliuzzi, nbc's tom winter is with us as well, and casey jordan, a criminologist. let me start with you, frank. you and i were listening to that press conference here, what is the headline? what stood out to you? >> my takeaway, reading between the lines having given many law enforcement press conferences is that they don't have much to go on. we heard a lot of talk but very little substance. by that i mean i can glean from what they said that certain things may not be working for them. what am i talking about? technical forensics and cell phone identification. >> why do you think they don't have that? >> because they literally say we don't know where he is. we don't have a lead. we're checking all these areas. we're checking -- we're doing dives in the river. we're going to go arm in arm and do a line search through the woods. he may have ditched any device that he had on him. secondly, it would appear that heat seeking infrared technology that you use from the air seems not to be working because they're not focusing on a certain area where they see a heat signat

joining us now, cnn chief law enforcement intelligence analyst john miller, and casey jordan, criminalologistavioral analyst. john, the cell phone found a note left behind, but it does not explain a motive, according to evan's sources. what does that add to this, help or complicate? >> well, the fact that they recovered a cell phone, and the fact that there was a note are both indicators of preplanning. now, most active shooters have a planning arc. this is just the statistics across the genre, but have a planning arc of 3 1/2 weeks. placing a note means he knew what he was going to do before he got ready and went out that night to do it, leaving the phone behind tells us more. he knows that's a way that people can be tracked. if he left it behind and he's a planner, he maybe has a burner to account for that. and that raises the question, is his plan to go near or far, or is there something else that he has planned? >> yeah. it raises more questions is what it does as part of this. there are now -- we were talking before the commercial break about the 18 people, we're learning more about some

. >> i want to quickly go now to casey jordan, a criminologist and behavioral analyst. your reaction to someone who studies these types of incidents. >> well, of course i've been covering this for the past 48 hours like everyone else, and i noted a shift this morning in the 10:00 a.m. presser, when they really went into a great deal of detail about diving teams going into the river that i could tell there was a shift they truly believed he was deceased by his own hand. they were not really fanning out through the woods so much. as andrew mccabe noted earlier the boat launch was the last place he was known to be, so it's not surprising at all to me that he was found today apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. but i think it was really important -- everyone seems to be really preoccupied with did he die two days ago or was he on the loose or did he die today? i can almost guarantee you he was within tworsf committing the crime, so i think our take aways are complete relief. our hearts are with the victim's families. but the overall message here is that the signs were t

. >> all right, we're watching this, we're obviously not going anywhere, casey jordan joins the conversationofile. casey, you see this, the point that's made in clear here, they believe he may be in there, they may know for sure isn't there, they made to be doing this because it's possibilities in there and they have a tap, but they're not 100 percent sure. what is it say to you if he is indeed after all of this, evading laufman to 24 hours and imminent after he killed 18 people, willing to callum anymore, would've gone possibly back to his home which is what we're looking at right now. >> it's fascinating to me, erin, that they are there now, 24 hours later, once they had the identity of the shooter yesterday they would've gone to that house. if he would've gotten inside, swept, it looked for him there. the idea that they're back 24 hours later really may suggest that he returned there or perhaps he was hiding there and they didn't detect in the first time around. i have a hard time believing that. but were fascinated by the white suv that was left by the boat on because increasingly that c
