casey newton has written about this exclusively for the verge. has a new article out about moderation at google and youtube. casey: this story is basically two stories in one. i tell the story of these low-paid immigrant contractors who work in austin, texas, making $18.50 an hour, working on what youtube calls the ve, violent extremism. i also tell the story of a young woman who had a great salary, goldplated benefits, but after a year she got ptsd as well. kind of a story about the different levels of care you get depending on whether you are a contractor or not. kurt: you wrote a similar investigation into facebook's content moderator practices. did you notice a lot of similarities or were there a lot of differences? casey: definitely similar in a lot of ways. the companies operate this part of their business like a call center. there were noticeable differences. facebook gives their employees about nine minutes a day to decompress. google gives them two hours. that, i think, is better. the average moderator is having -- kurt: mark, give us co

. >> joining us now is the reporter behind it, silicon valley editor casey newton.hanks for joining us today. this is certainly a topic more broadly content moderation that you have been breaking news on all year long. tell us a little more about what you found out is happening at youtube. >> reporter: part of what i have been trying to understand this year, one of the thoughts i had was maybe if you paid the moderators better the work would be easier. what daisy's story tells us is that is not necessarily the case. she had the gold plated benefits. she had the good -- but they're doing it for $18.50 an hour. there is a real injust tls ooirng. >> the fact that it's companies like alphabet google that are in focus, how much of it should be falling on some of the companies that this type of work is being outsourced to, as well >> i think some of these other companies need to answer for the working conditions that they have created. but i think it's important to note that alphabet, facebook are very prescriptive in how these centers are set up. they are acutely aware o
