we descended from john sheryll cashin -- cashin, but in the nee was of a slave owner. the father of my great grandfather. herschel's father, that does father who was also named john was one of the more prominent slave owners and augusta. so here i had to contend with not only did i descend from slavery, but i descended from wells, considerable wealth, born of slavery. and i could tie my family's history of relative advantage, you know, for generations of educated people, my great-grandfather was -- had a classical education in philadelphia. the institute for college use and became a lawyer. i can tie that. do in revelation. and i reconciled myself to that history by what my grandfather, great-grandfather chose to do with that. he just to go back to the south, which she did not have to. he chose to work with people of color. he chose to identify with people of color when, in fact, several of the siblings were pale enough to pass. they did pass. so he was a bit of an agitator as well. that was one thing. >> host: professor cashin, what was your childhood like? >> guest:
