once the oilfields started, casper started to boom. casper is where the first refinery was built. casper was the end of the rail lines. that is where the oil went -- to casper, to get on the rail line. to go to the larger refiners. where we are now is the northern end of the salt creek field. it is five miles wide and nine miles long. it is an actual oil dome. where the pressure from underneath pushed the rocks up. the top part you wrote it off. that is where we are standing now, where the top portion of the earth was eroded away. this land was all federal land. there was free grazing going on out here. the speculators would come in and they would dig a six foot square hole, 10 feet deep. if they found oil, they had an oil site. these claims were 40 acres. so, if they found oil in a hole, they dug 40 acres around that as their oil site. many would dig a series of holes. then, that would tie several claims together. some of these guys have had these claims and with then either go ahead and terrel themselves or they would try to sell these claims. they had to do $100 worth of improv

casper collins and four other soldiers are killed. amazingly, the other guys made it back or it about four hours later, the army supply wagons show up on the horizon. this is called the battle of red butte and the army shows -- sees the wagons show up in fire a warning shot with her canon and the tribes see them and race out in that direction and attacked the wagon supply train. it was led by commissary sergeant amos custard. there were 25 guys with that group. there were five of them an advanced guard and they wheel to the right and raced down to the river and get rid of their horses and three of those guys actually made it back to the fort. of the people at the supply wagons were killed. shortly after that because of the battles and because we have a young lieutenant named caspar collins who was the son of the regimental colonel, the army changes the name of this fort. from 62 -- agency d5, this was called platte bridge station. in agency d5, they change the name of the 424 caspar -- in 1865, they change the name of the fort to fort

a town like casper was really in ranching country. cattle was everything in the economy at that time. is the theft of cattle. in an area like this, the way that was the way that was police was actually largely private. the registration came into the wyoming stock owners association . the stock growers association had the take is that hard to police the theft of cattle to try and prevent it. the theft of cattle is simply larceny, so theoretically what happened is that the perpetrators were arrested and taken to the county courthouse and given a speedy trial. as a practical matter the distances involved often ended in death. if a person was found rustling cattle and caught they could the stocks to be coming back in. it sounds barbaric, but you realize how far out you were at any one time, bringing a person it is not an easy thing to do and people often just didn't do it. there has been a lot of dissatisfaction amongst the big interest in central wyoming. it began the process of some assassinations in the southern johnson county area whe
