chris cassidy and tom marshburn are in the air lock and they'll be headed out to fix an ammonia leak in just a moment. we want to bring in cnn's john zarrella covering this from miami. walk us through leading up to this moment, what's going to happen as they start this emergency space walk as they call it. >> reporter: sure, they're a little bit behind schedule, had a little more difficulty getting suited up and getting into the outer portion where they are now but as you mentioned they should be out momentarily. what happened was about 48 hours ago the crew began to notice flakes, white flakes coming out of a section of the international space station. so they fairly quickly identified that it was ammonia leaking out, and ammonia is used to cool the space station. space station generates a lot of heat. ammonia absorbs the heat and it's pumped out of the space station. now give the viewers a look at what we're talking about here. the astronauts will traverse out here along this truss, the backbone of the station and in this area, right around where all of these solar arrays are, ther

what you're looking at there is through the helmet cam of astronaut chris cassidy. what they're doing is removing the spare pump that they have up there. they've already removed the one that was in place, where they thought that they were going to find the leak, or might find the leak. they did not find it. they're saying this ask a vexing problem now. they're not having any joy, they're not seeing the same flakes they saw a couple of days ago. but they decided to go ahead and put the spare pump in, and then they'll move forward with more troubleshooting. it may end up at the end of the day, when they're finished with this 6 1/2-hour space walk, that it's just going to require another space walk by another team down the road, before they actually can isolate the problem. real quickly, brianna, what they were trying to do is get out there as quickly as they could, while that ammonia, the flakes of ammonia were still coming out of that suspect area. but they don't see them now. that may mean there's no more ammonia in the system there. that's why they're not seeing th

they get under way this morning, two veteran nasa space walkers chris cassidy and tom marshburn to try to replace the pump essentially. if all goes well the cooling systems come back up and everything will be hunky dory and nobody has a problem. but if they can't fix that, then they start to worry about, well, what is it going to take to address this ammonia leak and what is it going to take to deal with the coolant systems? as you alluded to already, lester, it is very unusual to put together a spacewalk so quickly but they're going to lose the expertise of tom marshburn in a couple days because he is scheduled to return to earth on monday on the soyuz which returns to earth. they want to take advantage of hicks expertise and his colleague's to get them out to fix this as quickly as they can. those two haven't done a space walk in four years so they're relying on some of this, the muscle memory if you will for these two. >> we'll wish them luck with the ultimate do-it-yourself project. thanks very much. >>> there are new questions this morning about the deadly attack in benghazi, liby

>> actually, we're watching remarkable video from the helmet cam of astronaut chris cassidy.side the international space station. they're basically performing some plumbing work 250 miles above the surface of the work. the two astronauts are trying to hunt down and locate the source of an ammonia leak and repair it if they possibly can. we're about one hour into what could be a six-hour spacewalk today, an emergency spacewalk and quick turn around for the two astronauts. >> steve, how did they know something was wrong? >> the crew on board, the six-person crew saw white flakes floating away from the station. looked like snowflakes. it was frozen bits of ammonia floating away. they've had problems in the area before with ammonia leaks. they thought it was the same thing. that's what it was. the attempt to repair and tha and remarkable attitude by the astronauts. the commander tweeted this is what we trained for r, for years. it's a fun day. >> just a little astronaut fun. that's interesting to see the white flakes, right? it does look like snow. but that doesn't make sense. >>
