castelli. i'm executive director of seiu1021. we represent the largest union in bart with over 1400 service and maintenance workers. we're very sorry and sad to be standing in this early morning with the trains silent and our workers on strike due to the inability to reach an agreement with the bart district at the collective bargaining table. most of you know in the last week, we have had intensive bargaining that's featured a federal mediator from washington, d.c. and the last bargaining session we had was a marathon. it was 28, almost 30 hours of bargaining. we really thought we were going to reach an agreement. uhm -- the union had moved a lot off its positions on economic issues. we had moved to bart's position on pensions. we had moved to bart's position -- we had moved to bart's position on healthcare costs. we had agreed to lower our request for a wage increase. progress was being made. we were substantially close to reaching agreement. but in the last minute, in the last part of the bargaining, bart sort of did what we c
