okay this is, uh, current currently up at castle peak right now. we have been seeing multiple spin outs and people without the proper tracking devices on their vehicles. uh, we do ask that if you can avoid your travel plans, please do so. because, uh, the weather is only going to get worse tonight, right? >> so that's what our meteorologists are saying as well. so let me just ask you, i see some trucks going by. at what point are the roads closed? like 50 and 80. >> uh, caltrans determines, uh, when the road gets shut down and they'll they'll take a lot of things into consideration, such as, uh, the traction that the vehicles are getting, the visibility on the roadways and, um, just how fast the storm is moving, what the storm is putting down, how fast they can keep up with it. uh, they are trying their best. they're trying very hard to keep up with this storm. yeah but it's hard, right, because it's dumping so hard and coming down so fast. >> um, when do you think it'll be safe for folks to start driving up there again? >> uh, i would just i would

this is i-80 near castle peak. you can see cars at a standstill there. visibility not great. here's just one example of how dangerous these driving conditions can be. 80 was closed for a while this morning because of this. that big rig landed on its side. if you are headed that direction, chains are required. chp is highly discouraging any non-essential travel into the mountains. even ski resorts announcing closures and delays through the weekend including tahoe, mt. heavenly and palisades tahoe. let's bring in kevin cooper live near the south shore. i see it's a little windy there. how is it feeling right now? >> reporter: it's feeling like we got a little bit of mother nature hitting us tonight. >> it is pretty serious, right? cal trans, chp, ski resorts telling people to stay away. >> reporter: absolutely. this is a big storm. this isn't something to mess around with. this is going to be a big challenge. winds are starting to pick up. i'm at lake level. i'm seeing gusts upwards of 75 miles an hour. that means the ridge tops at 8,000 and 9,000 feet probably at 100 to 120 ri

donner summit, down i-80, all of the traffic at castle peak. keeping people out of the way so the plows can go through and attempt to clear some of the lanes and keep up a little bit with the amount of snow that is falling. what is falling at the rate of 2-four inches an hour adds up quickly. it will increase more heading through tonight. you can see the intense snowfall outlined in the darker shades of blue here. and the snow line heading downslope. the coldest of the cold is settling in. pushing it down to 2,000 feet by early tomorrow morning. winter storm warning, closer to home as well, the amounts of snow, modest in comparison in the sierra. and wind gusts of 50 miles an hour going to result in hazardous conditions there as well with the bulk of the snowfalling tomorrow night into early on sunday morning. let's take a look at what is happening around the bay area with the amount of rain fallen so far. two inches now. the santa cruz mountains, 1 1/2 inches for kentfield in the north bay. almost that much in napa, half an inch for dublin and

this is the live view of i-80 eastbound at castle peak, just west of donner summit. you can see, well, these vehicles aren't going anywhere because now the interstate is closed. of course, they'll try to get the ones in between the turn-around spots off the road, but it's going to be slow going through the next several hours for even those folks because the snow will continue to intensify. you can see the deeper shades of blue, the snow equivalent of heavy downpours. it's snowing at the rate two of to 4 inches an hour picking up to 3 to 5 inches an hour through this evening. around the bay area it's rain, quite a bit in spots. the band of rain that extends from solana county through contra costa county into san francisco has been training along the same line. it will budge through the next 30 to 45 minutes or so. there has been quite a bit of rain in downtown san francisco in the past 60 minutes, even a cloud-to-ground lightning strike in the vicinity of the bay bridge an hour ago. there's another band of heavy rain that extends from eastern alameda county through sa
