kpix 5's cate caugiran is at the scene at van ness and grove and cate, you have learned the person wasswalk when he was hit. >> reporter: yes, i did, michelle. in the aftermath of that accident, it's still here, i want to show you, take a look. officers say some of the debris is the victim's belongings when he was hit in the crosswalk. investigators are collecting evidence at van ness and grove. about 2:30 this morning, witnesses told police a man in his 50s was walking westbound on van ness in the crosswalk when a dark colored vehicle hit him. it sent the man's belongings flying across the street and left him with life-threatening injuries. officers say his skull may have been fractured. that victim was taken to san francisco general hospital. as they continue to look for the suspect, police will also be pulling surveillance video in this area. they say at this point, they do not know if the light was red or green when the driver drove across this intersection or if the pedestrian had the right of way. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> southbound van ness is blocked bet

kpix 5's cate caugurian has the latest, she joins us live from san lorenzo. >> reporter: investigators are inside the home as we speak and you can take a look. the alameda county sheriff's crime lab is now parked out in front. we know investigators are gathering new evidence and conducting interviews with everyone involved. here's what happened. we know it started just around 10:00 last night. alameda county sheriff's office says it originally came in as a medical call. firefighters and paramedics arrived to this home and when they got her, they said -- here. they said the suspect was combative and hostile can they called alameda county sheriffs for help. as the paramedics wither trying -- were trying to transport the suspect. he broke free and ran back into the home. they went inside the home and that's when the man came out swinging with a baseball bat. >> he violently attacks the sergeant hitting him with the baseball bat and attempting to hit him again and that's when shots were fired. >> reporter: now a sergeant and a deputy shot at the suspect killing him. neighbors in the area r

cate caugurian is in san francisco with the latest. cate? >> reporter: michelle, all five officers were sitting together. they were brought up in two different groups. first the judge called ian ferminger. these officers were charged with multiple conspiracies including stealing marijuana from evidence and making deals with informants to sell it and split the from fit. ferminger entered not guilty and robes did not enter a three. three officers with the former police station. all of them pled not guilty. now surveillance videos released by the public defender shows them barging into tenderloin hotel rooms without warrants and stealing things and lying about it on police reports. one of the attorneys of the defendants is questioning why it took song so long for the government to file charges. >> i don't think they have been actively investigating to find some evidence. i think they sat on this and that in and of itself suggests they didn't feel they had a good case. >> public defender jeff adachi says the misconduct led to the dismissal of 10

kpix 5's cate caugiran is in the newsroom this morning and, cate, doctors say this illness is like polio but haven't pinpointed what's behind it. >> reporter: this illness is still being investigated. health officials say so far there have been 20 cases here in california and doctors have not found any common causes connecting them. in the past year, children between the ages of 5 and 20 have developed a sudden paralytic polio-like illness meaning their arms and legs have lost the ability to move. the centers for disease control and prevention says so far it's a small cluster and want to ease parents's concern. they say this is not an epidemic but a rare phenomenon. once these kids are diagnosed, these diseases are very difficult if not impossible to treat. >> it can affect one or more limbs and the prognosis that we have seen so far is not good. most of the children we have seen have not recovered use of their arm or leg. >> reporter: the doctor from lucille packard children's hospital at stanford says polio vaccines do not protect children from the disease but stress it is still import

live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> police say rhoades was a former chairman of cedarville rancheria. >>> and new this morning, a homeowner in east san jose tells police he shot an intruder in self-defense. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is outside the house in san jose where investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. >> reporter: this is san jose's eighth homicide of the year. it happened last night here in east san jose. this is the scene just after 8 p.m. that is when a man who lives here on pine ridge way said someone tried to break into his house and fired a gun in the process. so the man got his own gun and shot at the would-be robber. that man and another suspect then took off in a speeding vehicle. soon after, a man was dropped off at a local hospital with a gunshot wound where he died and police believe that man who ended up at the hospital was the man who tried to break into this home. the man who lived here by the way was not injured in the process. we are still trying to find out more details from police this morning. live in san jose, anne ma

cate caugiran is in the newsroom now following the investigation. victims were meeting about evicting a suspect a former chairman of cedarville rancheria. all tours police say 44-year- old cherie rhoades is in custody facing murder and attempted murder charges. rhoades allegedly shot four women and two men in the middle of an eviction hearing at the cedarville rancheria tribal office. we have a photo from the modot county record newspaper. at the time of the shooting aside from the court proceedings, school was also in session in the building. that included a daycare with a five-day-old child. this happened just before 3:30 yesterday afternoon. alturas police say in the middle of the tribal eviction, rhoades pulled a semi-automatic handgun and then started shooting. police say that rhoades ran out of bullets at one point and ran into the kitchen and grabbed a butcher knife and charged after a woman she already shot several times. then a bystander tackled her to the ground. >> the victims were confirmed at the scene and two victims were transported t

cate. >> reporter: the u.s.t of homeland security is concerned that terrorists will bring ingredients for things like toothpaste tubes on board planes to try to make bombs midflight. this is a live look now. this is sochi now, russian security forces are everywhere in that area. they built a so-called ring of steel to protect the olympic venues and visitors. as the olympic games get under way in sochi today, security officials are on alert for a new potential terror threat. the u.s. department of homeland security issued an advisory called a care line bulletin late wednesday warning airlines, terrorists may have found a new way to smuggle explosives on airplanes using toothpaste or skin care products. sources say the worry is teams of operatives could bring bomb- making components on board an airliner and then assemble an pro advised explosive device while the plane is in flight. the potential threat is aimed at russia and olympics and the security warning is for carriers going from international cities to russi
