plus, caterpillar pushing for over a decade.ill find out what the plans to do now that their wish has been granted on cuba. we will be back. ♪ >> at the mall this weekend, you're likely hunting for bargains. a lookyman is back with at stock valuations among retailers. >> if you look at these valuations, we are seeing near the highest levels we have had in more than a decade. a little lower than this time last year, but relatively i still. is 26.7.ing basis it compares to about 18.3 for the s&p 500s. considerably more expensive. the s&p rallied about 12%. on ae seeing these stocks relative basis as more expensive. if you look at the highest and lowest valuations, the highest are coming from tractor supply which is aindex, home-improvement type retailer. trading at more than ready times trailing. rounding out the top valuations. on the lower end of the spectrum, the game stops, macy's, which a lot of investors say is a top thomas but the valuation is relatively low. that the on, rounding out the lower end of the evaluation spectru

when caterpillar did report, the quarter turned out to be even uglier than the analysts had predicted. and some firms slashed their estimates for the rest of the year taking them down by an extraordinary 50%. can you imagine that? a 50% decline in earnings estimates? but, and this is important, cat's stock barely reacted to the bad news falling only slightly and then instantly stabilizing and then most importantly returning to where it was when the hideous earnings announcements were issued. thoo's that's a classic sign you're looking at a bottom right there, right there. cat was screaming, look at me! look at me! the bad news is out. the worst is over. and the best is yet to come. calling bottoms yourself can be a dangerous activity. you come in too early as so often happens, you're going to get caught. but sometimes the market will pretty much call the bottom for you, and that's what happened in 2009 when caterpillar reported awful numbers. the analysts eviscerated their estimates and the stock barely batted an eyelash. it may seem counterintuitive to buy a stock right after the est

caterpillar's $5 from the 52-week low.et me tell you something, a company like caterpillar have been moo maage issing earnings, there's no sales growth so to me ha 's the story in q-12015, all these multinationals in the face of this strong dollar and everything else going on, there won't be the revenue growth they're expecting and i think it will be a challenge. >> i'm dan brought up the high yield market. there's been a great deutsche bank report saying $60 is a tipping point. at that point that would force about of bs and cccs to restructure which would imply a default rate. that's scary stuff. >> it goes beyond the energy space, though. a lot of not always high yield but these bonds have been used to buy back stocks so exactly what dan was talking about. so when that game ends, when the financial engineering ends then you don't have to earnings per share growth. the markets cared about earnings per share growth, not revenue growth, and that's why every equity player like dan was saying, they are all looking at this hig

they're still shorting ibm and caterpillar. >> ibm doesn't surprise me.broken down and still beneath some of the technical levels. there will be a lot of folks that are betting on dow 18,000 again. ibm has to be part of it. warren buffet believes in it. certainly had a big pop today. on the caterpillar side, that's the side i believe jim is absolutely right on. ibm after this selloff maybe cleared out a lot of those weak hands. >> what do you do, dr. j., if he's right? he's like, look, this is ultimately a fundamental story about caterpillar, their exposure to mining. oil and gas, that's another leg. construction, that may be holding right there. if those two important pillars are weakening, who else looks vulnerable here? >> again, on their side, on the caterpillar side, they've been able to defy the odds because of and probably frustrate jim, who's a good friend, frustrate folks because the construction side of their business made up for -- and caught a lot of bears short. that was what the story was this year. now i don't think construction can surpris

economy could heat up in 2015 if millennials start to buy more houses, if caterpillar sells for tractors and if disney has anything to do with his short -- and a billion dollar plus global franchise. economists are optimistic the economy will grow fastener 2015, at least in part because of lower oil and gas prices. >> it's something that's certainly good for families, for house holds, it's putting more money in their possibilities, having to s less on gas and energy and so in that sense, it's like a tax cut that the boosts their spending power. >> reporter: the national association of business economics predicts u.s. gdp will grow 3.1% in 2015, up 2.2% in 2014. they see employers continuing to add more than 200,000 jobs a month in 2015, helping to push the unemployment rate down 2.4% next year from 5.8% in november this year. the federal reserve will help by keeping interest rates low. they do expect the fed to start raising rates in 2015 by raising them from zero now after keeping them at zero. rate increases will be small and gradual. >> they're going to stop taking away the punch bowl

joining us now, the president of the caterpillar foundation.et me start with you on the politics of this. it's a major campaign issue in kentucky and your state of west virginia. how important is coal in the push toward energy independence? >> well, it's always been the largest factor we have. coal has been a base load. that means at 24/7, you can country on your heat. you can count on your lights and everything to give you the tfrt from electricity. there's only two sources. coal and nuclear power that gives you 24/7 today. gas is coming on strong. and it will be once we get the pipeline done. but everything else is a compliment to that. for the the next 30 or 40 years, the department of energy says we need a base load of coal. we can do it better if the the government will work with us and quit working against us. >> i just got a graphic up here in terms of coal mined by state. west virginia, how much of the economy is in coal or other forms of energy sources? >> well, you have direct and indirect as far as the economy. i would say we're more

even with the 11 million people that are there, who can actually afford the caterpillar, opener coke great example. coke sells its product in every country on the planet except two. one is north korea, and the s cuba. i'm sure the cubans would enjoy drinking coca-cola but what they really need is bricks to build houses, and asphalts to repave the roads. the opportunity is more of an infrastructure play. the best business you could open in cuba is a home depot. there's plenty of labor and a great need. if you go outside of the tourist area, the infrastructure, the buildings areç crumbling. there are no street lamps, really. telecommunications is another area that's been underfunded. there's a state-run telecom company, but cuba basically lags much of the world in broadband benitration. there are fewer internet connections than in sudan or fiji. that's because the government has controlled internet access. there's basically one fiber optic cable connecting cuba to the world through venezuela. but there's no 3g, or 4g. companies like verizon or at&t see an opportunity there. they don't
