however just like caterpillar, march, 2009 j.p. morgan stock had already been obliterator ated and didn't get hit, instead got flat lined and inched up slightly, like with cat, the stocks telling you the estimates came down too far. sure enough we learned the losses were contained at $6 billion not $9 billion and that was the moment had you to buy. the stock was clubbed down to $31 previous month, if you bought previous month you caught an immense rally, matter of fact over time you caught a double. but it did go almost straight from 31 to 50 in a straight line, wow, 12 months 61% gain. same with fed ex. cut their numbers twice, everyone cut down and next thing you know you caught almost a double. you simply need to wait until the estimates are so low they can be beaten. lucky for you, the market will almost always tell when you it will happen as we saw with caterpillar in 2009 and j.p. morgan and most recently with fed ex. when estimates get slashed and market doesn't go lower, that's screaming that a bottom is probably at hand. >

>> well again, caterpillar is a great company. market share lead anywhere most of their industries, they depend a lot on infrastructure spending and mining and mining was above trend for a while. a lot of investors mistakenly thought there was structural improvement in the company. despite the mine deeg klein, we think a trend earnings number for caterpillar is between $7 and $8 a share. the stock trades at 80. put an s&p 500 multiple on that of 17 times and you've got more than 50% return. we don't think the mining business is going to earn trend numbers next year, but at oak mark we're long-term investors, we're trying to anticipate what a company will look like five years down the road. and i think caterpillar will still be viewed as a very good company five years from now. >> we were discussing at the top of the show, a new note out from goldman sachs. today, bill, suggesting not only that the market is expensive where it is now. as they were looking at maybe the areas of the market that were smoemost susceptible to thn a numb

caterpillar did not.was expecting on just about every front. you also rayed your guidance for the full year. what is it about the dollar that doesn't impact you? >> the dollar has impacted us and actually becky, you've written about this in the past. we've talked about it off and on over the years. we've worked for decades to structure our company so that we have a footprint in the big economies around the world. we have a big asset base in japan. we have a big asset base in europe, u.k. and brazil for example among others. when those currencies weaken and we have high cost structures and high costs in those countries, we benefit from the cost site. if you look at the numbers in the first quarter. our top line was impacted negatively about, down 4% year over year 2.6% of that was from currency translation. just less dollars coming in because of the weak currencies. but our cost structure, because we've got lots of asset base and lots of costs in those weak currency countries, actually improved our operati

we'll see how japanese rivals today will be affected by earnings from caterpillar and its expected to report a surge in profits and sales. earnings outlooks for japan will be coming thick and fast in the coming weeks and the dip in crude oil prices and commodity prices may effect negatively some of the energy related sector stocks. but the weakening yen is expected to show a record surge in profits for a lot of the exporters as well. that's going to be interesting coming up. >> and looks like the dollar dipped a touch. what happened there? >> we had the weekly jobless claims data which rose and showed more people applying for unemployment benefits and new home sales fell 11.4% from a year earlier. that dragged sentiment a little bit lower. 119.60. that was above 120 this time yesterday. the euro is stronger against the dollar despite disappointing april service data from the eurozone and concerns on greece were held back a little bit ahead of the meeting on friday. greece is expected to top the agenda there. >> asian indices are a focus as the asian-african summit came to a close. wha
