this is cathedral city. roads and the only way for emergency teams to rescue the stranded was to use a bulldozer. 14 elderly people were trapped in a senior care facility overnight on sunday and because their exit was locked firefighters had to load them onto the machine to get them to safety. i am joined now by cathedral city mayor, rita lamb. mary, thank you for being with us. how are you guys doing now? >> well, we are definitely in the recovery phase of this whole process but yesterday there were unbelievable scenes and there were amazing scenes. this bulldozer was rescuing these wonderful residents and relocating them, but this is something that i have never seen. i have lived in the desert since '81 and the intensity and the breath and scope of this whole hurricane hilary has just been devastating to our community. >> i'm looking at the bulldozer and people sitting on it. i'm finding it hard to believe. talk about the conversations that you had about frankly, the creativity and what they had to go thro

the storm also dropping trees onto cars and buildings throughout southern california in cathedral city, just south of palm springs, crews had to use a bulldozer to rescue residents who were surrounded by mud five feet deep. that included 14 elderly residents trapped in a senior home fire crews also managed to deal with gas leaks and sinkholes in the area caused by the storm. floodwater rolled like rivers over roads. emergency responders exhausted after working through the night, responding to drivers trapped in submerged cars and reports of people trapped on roofs. los angeles also was slammed with rain and powerful winds that knocked out power to some 50,000 customers overnight. their saturated hillsides still can pose a threat for mudslides. the lafd will continue to monitor these areas throughout the day in santa clarita, north of la. flooding caused a road to collapse in one area, mud even shooting into the air. and in san bernardino county, cleanup crews are contending with the mess left by long lines of sludge, mud and debris that slid down mountain slopes, blocked off roads and

they show the devastation caused in cathedral city. by storm hilary. the icon on the screen is because these pictures are taken from snapchat. the hollywood walk of fame there. and look at these pictures from death valley. very hot, now inundated with the water. so unusual to see these pictures there. this is las vegas — the rain there has triggered severe flooding. hundreds of flights have been cancelled at airports in the city. in victorville, near los angeles, some people watched floodwaters inch closer to their home — before making the decision to leave. all that started within an hour or two, and kept piling up and the water kept coming further back up the street, and just more and more. lives can't be replaced. material objects can. it's better to just replace a house and fix whatever gets damaged than to get somebody drowning over something that's avoidable. can't disagree with that. california's governor gave this update on the many problems now being tackled by the state's emergency services — a little earlier. there is an old

>> i was in cathedral city at the time and yeah, i don't know if it was the original earthquake or one of the aftershocks, but i was sitting a stoplight and all of a sudden my car was shaking and i wondered did the wind pick up and it finally hit me an earthquake was happening. >> just incredible, isn't it? i mean the fact that these came at the same time, purely coincidental partner according to the experts, but talk to us as a storm chaser, what happens now. will you go out early in the morning and sort of check out what the weather conditions are like? how do you work this? >> yeah. that's the thing i'll be doing tomorrow morning. i'll be waking up and basically going around checking conditions and seeing how much of this rain overnight has added to the current flooding that's happening right now. a lot of those washes are already full, so i'll be really curious to see how much more happens overnight and then see how many people ended up staying inside and how many more cars are we going to see stuck on the side and in the middle of the roads. >> yeah. that is the critical point her

we have stephanie elam in cathedral city not far from palm springs where many people are dealing with this huge amount of mud, stephanie, left in hilary's wake. tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: it's so much mud, now that we can get out here and see. i want you to see how far this spans out behind us because our todd anderson shot some beautiful drone video so you can see this road that i'm standing on, how far down the mud goes, and how there are trucks and cars, even a police vehicle down there, that are skewed and turned sideways because of how fast the water was moving overnight as hilary was making her way through there. we talked to jay who has been out all night helping rescue people because he has a jeep with a wench and snorkel and he could make it through and listen to what he saw. >> cars float big verner and monterrey and you had the power plant and people were trying to cross it. the sheriff couldn't get across, so i took them across so they could block the road off. people stuck everywhere. >> reporter: people out where they should not have been. they were telling

let's start with stephanie elam live on the ground in cathedral city. you've been there all day, overnight into the morning. what are you seeing? still water on the roads? >> reporter: oh, so much water. victor, take a look down here. i'm actually standing next to the edge of the curb here and i tried to put my toe down to feel how far that is and i can't reach it. that's how far it is. there was a car here, they got a tow truck. it took them four or five hours before the tow truck could get here. this is happening all through the desert towns because there was so much water in a short amount of time. this morning palm springs has heavy rain causing dangerous flood conditions and prompting three swift water rescues. >> we're asking residents to stay inside, stay where they are. >> reporter: the warning be is because of a situation like this. a pickup truck stuck in the middle of the street surrounded by deep rushing flood waters. they're so powerful a refrigerator was swept away. the flooding has covered an entire golf course. one homeowner said he's ne

response efforts because it could have been a lot worse, take a look at what happened here in cathedral city the scale of the water and mud left behind by hilary. bay area firefighters were part of those rescue efforts. the oakland fire department posted these images of a 16-person rescue team deployed in southern california to help with rescues and evacuations. among other tasks they're coming back tomorrow. many communities avoided a catastrophe they're facing a long cleanup ahead. >> i have never been through anything like this. last year was hard. this year is really tough. i wonder what will happen next. >> teams plan to do damage assessments in the coming days. l.a. is still feeling the effects of hilary. firefighters rushed to evacuate a hospital after its backup generators failed. their main power knocked off line early monday morning, and it's still not clear what caused the power outage. >>> at the height of tropical storm hilary, an alaska airlines jet made a rough landing. it happened at john wayne airport. the plane flew from seattle with 106 passengers and six crew members onbo

were trapped inside of their homes, you can see young kids sitting in the bucket, this is in cathedral city. they were able to rescue 46 people. another family was stranded on the roof as debris rushed through the roadways. >> in a matter of three minutes, my whole bottom floor was filled up with water to waist level. we did make it to safety by a good samaritan. somebody passing by and picking us up. >> reporter: people have begun the long process of digging out and cleaning up, caltrans said maintenance crews were working around the clock as they cleared roadways and floodwaters, mudslides, rocks and other things left from the storm, so people should expect to see road closures for a while before these roadways are cleared. >> as for the baby that was born, any idea whether it was a boy or girl? >> i have no idea. >> if it was a girl, they have to name it hilary, right? >>> record rain falls in august were broken in some spots, this is the monitor map, showing most of southern california out of drought conditions, this has not happened in years. it likely didn't do much to improve our wat

drone video over cathedral city in riverside county. of los angeles says a mudslide narrowly missed her home. >> last year was hard, this year is really tough. now i wonder what the heck is going to happen, you know, next. so hopefully we don't have this much weather and we can all get back on our feet. >> this is new video in las vegas, another place with widespread flooding. experts say hilary may rank among wettest tropical cyclones ever recorded. >>> some bay area firefighters are on their way back from southern california after responding from the floods there. crews were deployed to help with the storm. once they come back here they're switching to fire mode. hilary may have put a pause on fire season but the general consensus is that fire danger is still high after weeks of little or no rain. recent lightning strikes have sparked fires burning 28,000 acres. >>> the humidity from hilary is easing up, but the temperatures will not. here is kari hall with a look at the week ahead. >> we are getting ready for less humidity and hotter

it looks like a giant mud pool behind you in cathedral city. >> reporter: yeah.eporter: this was a tropical storm when i got here. not the mud. look at this mess. water is receding. we're seeing it go down. water has been running off here. look at how thick this is. this is like an inch thick. and you see a different mud on top. when you get further out, it gets much deeper and that is why there are still cars trapped out here. you can see an officer is talking to the person who has been sitting. in car for about six hours after they got stuck here. it is still a mess. we know that some of the roads in and out of all that springs are open. however, several of the major roads remain closed at this time. 911 communications are back up. the reason why is this is one way to get to the interstate here and it remains closed here as you can see. perhaps in the distance. there are some cars, some semitrucks still blocking the road but there is some construction, movement of large vehicles trying to clear the road. trying to get this mud out of the way. this is why school

the storm also dropping trees onto cars and buildings throughout southern california in cathedral city, just south of palm springs , crews had to use a bulldozer to rescue residents who were surrounded by mud five feet deep. that included 14 elderly residents trapped in a senior home fire crews also managed to deal with gas leaks and sinkholes in the area caused by the storm. floodwater rolled like rivers over roads. emergency responders exhausted after working through the night, responding to drivers trapped in submerged cars and reports of people trapped on roofs. los angeles also was slammed with rain and powerful winds that knocked out power to some 50,000 customers overnight night as skies clear the department of water and power crews have already mobilized to return power to angelenos. their saturated hillsides still can pose a threat for mudslides. the lafd will continue to monitor these areas throughout the day. in santa clarita, north of la, flooding caused a road to collapse in one area, mud even shooting into the air. and in san bernardino county, cleanup crews are contendin

and then there is this video from cathedral city. crew his to get creative. they used bulldozers to get to a dozen people trapped by mud three to five feet high. firefighters ended up putting them in a front loader and driving them to higher ground. palm springs only gets about four or five inches of rain in a year and parts of coachella valley got anywhere from 2-6 just this weekend. >> i am digging around the truck right now. we got stuck. we got stuck. we were trying to come through here. we seep the rest of the cars make it. we joined the line. >> reporter: a number of drivers spent the day digging their vehicles out. here is a look at that in action there is video of a truck racing down a hill in san bernardino county the debris damaged two bridges. >> we set up sandbags over the weekend thinking it would be sufficient but it blew right through them. >> boulders in the backyard. i don't know how they got on that side of the garage. that is a boulder the size of a volkswagen just sitting over there.. >> the mud damaging homes, they are still working to ge

also in the coachella valley, residents of cathedral city are shoveling out from all the mud there. meanwhile in los angeles, more than 200 patients had to be evacuated from the hospital when the backup generator went out. the main power was already out, and as those patients were leaving a brand-new one arrived as a pregnant mom gave birth in the dark. >> supervising nurses were there, physicians were attending. what they ended up doing was putting together a whole bunch of flashlights and shining them at the ceiling and illuminating the room so there was plenty of light. >> we are told baby and mom are doing just fine. >>> we are monitoring an update right now from officials in maui in the process of uncovering remains from the fires. they say crews will take their time to research everything in the fire zone and they say they are using coordinates to keep track of the remains found. >>> bay area firefighters are also in maui and a crew from san francisco is going on their vacation time. crews from petaluma are going to help out. the fire department says nine firefighters have bee
